It may be tough keeping Trax of this series

first_imgThe first time Greinke faced Cardinals No. 2 hitter Carlos Beltran, for example, was a three-pitch at-bat. All of the pitches were called strikes. The first two pitches nicked the outer edge of the strike zone box. The third, a back-door slider, was a hair outside, but umpire Gerry Davis called Beltran out.Beltran stood at the plate a bit baffled but walked away.In the third inning, after Greinke set down eight in a row, he gave up a single to pitcher Joe Kelly. Then came a walk to Matt Carpenter.Beltran came up again with Greinke suddenly on the ropes.First pitch: Taken low, ball one.Second pitch: Shows it hits the bottom left of the batter’s box. Beltran takes it. Davis calls ball two.Third pitch: Low and just outside the box. Beltran swings and misses. Strike one.Fourth pitch: Way outside. Ball three.Fifth pitch: Bottom right of the strike zone. Beltran swings and doubles off the wall in center field to tie the game 2-2.What did we learn from that exchange? Not quite sure. But maybe the fact Greinke got the borderline strike call the first time, but not the second time, was either just how the graphic was calibrated or Davis was adjusting his calls to how Greinke performed at the moment. It’s left to our own confusing interpretation, really. When the Dodgers start up their own network next season, will they resort to employing it based on a producer’s philosophy on how to do a game that’s supposed to be more in tune with how younger viewers are used to watching? Or is there already enough clutter on a TV screen, having more real estate to cover because of today’s wide-screen technology? It may be that we’ve finally been able to finally decipher that score/ball/strike/out/baserunner dot-pattern on the top left corner as a baseball instrument rather than a bowling alley scratch pad.Would a Dodger PitchTrax cause Vin Scully to adjust the way he describes a game on TV? It could. And if it did, would we all be better for it?Keep watching, and see how it starts to skew your judgment, right or wrong. Then decide if it’s something you want in your wheelhouse.• If you’re apt to believe the Vegas wise guys have it figured out, the Dodgers will knock the Cardinals out in seven games, according to Bovada, which has set the odds of that prediction at the lowest, 7/2. A Dodgers win in six is next at 4/1.A Cardinals win in six or seven is next at 5/1.But then again, why even bother with that? The Dodgers already are dead even with Boston to win the World Series at 12/5, according to them as well. St. Louis is only a 3/1 choice.A Dodgers-Red Sox match-up, if you wanted to pick a match-up, is at 2/1, with Dodgers-Tigers at 5/2. Read between the lines: they’re saying the Dodgers’’chances are better than advancing than the Cardinals, since a pairing of the Cardinals/Red Sox (11/4) or Cardinals/Tigers (7/2) are higher odds.• TBS reported viewership has been up six percent compared to last year for viewership of the division series games, even with two fewer Game 5’s.The five most-watched games, however, don’t involve the Dodgers, who exist in the country’s No. 2 TV market. Those would be:1.Pittsburgh vs. St. Louis, NLDS Game 5: 6.1 million total viewers2.Detroit vs. Oakland, ALDS Game 5: 5.5 million3.Boston vs. Tampa Bay, ALDS Game 4: 5.2 million4.Tampa Bay vs. Cleveland, A.L. Wild Card Game: 4.7 million5.Pittsburgh vs. Cincinnati, N.L. Wild Card Game: 4.6 millionFact is, none of the Dodgers-Braves games cracked the TBS Top 10 most-watched contests of the 18 previous live postseason games through the division series. In L.A., the four game NLDS had ratings of 8.4, 6.9, 9.6 and 12.0.• Lauren Miller of Washington D.C. seems to be the latest one willing to try to post a petition on Change.org in order to let those at Fox and TBS know some prefer to hear Vin Scully call the games instead of the hired network crews.Since it was posted Oct. 7, however, only 25 have signed up. She’s seeking 100 responses. Then what? Not much, really. They’ve been attempted in past years, and none of the networks have been tempted to bite.Representatives at TBS already have admitted getting Scully to be part of its NLCS coverage has been discussed but is not likely. Fox has the World Series starting Oct. 23 and likely would consider having Scully as a guest broadcaster only in middle innings. TBS has used it for years now, refining it on its regular-season Sunday package of games that you’ve most likely checked out infrequently. The pros: If accurate, it’s another decent tool to demonstrate things such as how a) Yasiel Puig really does swing at a lot of balls or b) an ump can change the zone to his liking no matter what the computer says, and the players seem to live with it as long as he’s consistent. The cons: If you start relying on it as an exact science, you miss the point. It’s daunting enough to try to figure out just what the rectangle box with red and green circled numbers means after a while. During some extended at-bats, it looks like an overhead shot of a billiards table.Where we found it somewhat compelling was how it showed the way Dodgers starter Zach Greinke worked the zone during his outing in Game 1 of the NL Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorcenter_img Sidetracked enough yet by gazing at TBS’PitchTrax during the Dodgers’ playoff coverage? Not that it’s a complete dis-Trax-ion.You’d think most of us would be used to it by now. But the more we see it, the more we tend to focus too much on it. Not in a good way.Years of Dodgers and Angels coverage on Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket have avoided such a video-game type graphic, and we’re thankful. But other Fox regional networks use it on their local coverage.last_img read more

Ravens RB Rice receives 2-game suspension from NFL

first_imgBaltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, left, hands off to running back Ray Rice during a training camp practice, Thursday, July 24, 2014, at the team’s practice facility in Owings Mills, Md. (AP Photo)OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice received a two-game suspension from the NFL on Thursday following his offseason arrest for domestic violence.Rice will miss the season opener against AFC North champion Cincinnati on Sept. 7 and the Sept. 11 game on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The six-year veteran was arrested following a Feb. 15 altercation in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in which he allegedly struck then-fiancee Janay Palmer. The 27-year-old Rice has been accepted into a diversion program, which upon completion could lead to the charges being expunged.Rice met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell last month after joining the diversion program. Goodell ultimately decided to suspend the running back for two games without pay and fine him an additional game check “for conduct detrimental to the NFL in violation of the league’s Personal Conduct Policy.”Despite the court’s decision not to impose criminal punishment, “the Commissioner determined, as he advised Rice, that the conduct was incompatible with NFL policies and warranted disciplinary action.”In a letter to Rice, Goodell wrote:  “As you acknowledged during our meeting, your conduct was unquestionably inconsistent with league polices and the standard of behavior required of everyone who is part of the NFL. The league is an entity that depends on integrity and in the confidence of the public and we simply cannot tolerate conduct that endangers others or reflects negatively on our game. This is particularly true with respect to domestic violence and other forms of violence against women.”Rice’s suspension will begin on Aug. 30. He will be eligible for reinstatement Sept. 12 after the Pittsburgh game. Rice may participate in all aspects of training camp and preseason games.“It is disappointing that I will not be with my teammates for the first two games of the season, but that’s my fault,” Rice said in a statement issued by the Ravens. “As I said earlier, I failed in many ways. But, Janay and I have learned from this. We have become better as a couple and as parents. I am better because of everything we have experienced since that night. The counseling has helped tremendously.”Rice is the team’s career leader in total scrimmage yards and ranks behind only Jamal Lewis in total yards rushing.Bernard Pierce is expected to start for Rice in Baltimore’s first two games.Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said in a statement: “We appreciate the thorough process the league office used to evaluate the incident with Ray Rice. The time the Commissioner spent with Ray and Janay is typical of the extra steps the NFL takes when making decisions regarding discipline issues. While not having Ray for the first two games is significant to our team, we respect the league’s decision and believe it is fair.”He added, “We also respect the efforts Ray has made to become the best partner and father he can be. That night was not typical of the Ray Rice we know and respect. We believe that he will not let that one night define who he is, and he is determined to make sure something like this never happens again.”Rice’s teammates were not stunned by the news of the suspension.“You knew something was going to happen,” wide receiver Torrey Smith said. “I’ll be glad when those two games are up.”Coach John Harbaugh said, “It’s part of the process. There are consequences when you make a mistake; we’ll move forward.”Rice participated Thursday in Baltimore’s first full-squad practice. Before that session began, the Ravens lost cornerback Aaron Ross for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, a mishap that occurred during his conditioning test.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLlast_img read more

Saints finish season in thrilling fashion, earning three of four points from TWU

first_imgRiding a season high two game win streak, the Saints had no reason to hold back as they welcomed Trinity Western University (TWU) Spartans to Nelson for their final two games of the season.Knowing that at least one win would give the Selkirk men’s hockey team the highest point total in their BCIHL history, it was a matter of buckling down and conquering a team who had just recently beat Simon Fraser University (SFU) and Okanagan College, two of the top teams in the league. On Friday night at the Nelson and District CC the stage was set and the Spartans were determined to make the Saints challenge all that much more difficult by scoring the first two goals in a game where Selkirk out hit and out played their feisty opponent from Langley, BC. Working through the same adversity that plagued them much of the season, and without injured players Scott Jago and Caleb Roy, the Saints started the comeback midway through the second period on a goal by Burhan Pourmokhtari.Caleb Georgetti and Devon Nazaroff added to the excitement by pocketing two more goals to give the Saints a 3-2 lead after two. The third period was all Saints as TWU was simply shutdown and Brendan Madlung scored the insurance marker with three minutes left to give the Saints a 4-2 win. Adding helpers in the contest was Scotty Traverse (3), Travis Herlein, Adam Makaroff, Braden Mace and Devon Nazaroff. Goal tender Spenser Wong earned first star honors by stopping 38 of 40 shots. Game two on Saturday night started out much like the first with TWU scoring first on a shorthanded play take a 1-0 lead into the first break. Caleb Georgetti notched a goal for the Saints early in the second with assists going to Cody Baker and Scotty Traverse. However, only three minutes later TWU managed to squeak another goal past Saints tendy, Todd Hoodicoff putting the Saints down 2-1 after two periods of play. Coming out of the gates in the third with all cylinders firing, Scotty Traverse, assisted by Devin Kerckhof and Josh Mace, notched his fifth point of the weekend only 9 seconds into the stanza. That was it for scoring as the two teams battled back and forth, trading many chances and special team opportunities. The game settled as a tie as per BCIHL regulations. Hoodicoff stood on his head stopping 34 of 36 shots earning the first star nod. The Saints finished sixth place in the regular season after earning seven out of a possible eight points over their final four games. This was however not enough to qualify them for the BCIHL Championships hosted by SFU in mid March. The top five teams in regular season play earn this honor. Complete stats are available at www.bcihl.ca The Saints would like to thank everyone who supported the team over the past year including the numerous volunteers and sponsors. A special thanks goes out to the Nelson Leafs volunteers and staff at the NDCC for their time and dedication this past weekend. Stay tuned for Saints recruiting updates in the near future.last_img read more

Makana: a beeline for success

first_imgBottles of the golden liquid are snappedup by a growing number of mead drinkers.(Image: Makana Meadery) It is the hard work of the Cape honey beethat produces the main ingredient forMakana’s popular beverage. (Image: Mashpedia) MEDIA CONTACTS • Garth Cambray  Makana Meadery  +27 46 636 1227 RELATED ARTICLES • Bee fence keeps elephants out • New wine label protects trees • SA develops rooibos flavour wheel • Sudan brews its own beer industry • SAB first with UV purificationChristel JordaanMead – although the name of this wine made from fermented honey may conjure up images of medieval frivolity, this is no longer the case.Biotechnologist Garth Cambray and his team at Makana Meadery are proving that even a 20 000-year-old recipe has a place in today’s modern era.Located in the picturesque city of Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, Grahamstown Brewery – trading as Makana Meadery – was founded in 2000 by Cambray, his colleague the late Winston Leukes, and beekeeper Vuyani Ntantiso as a means to commercially produce and market iQhilika (isiXhosa, meaning “mead”).In African culture, mead is said to give the drinker the strength of a lion. Mead is produced throughout the continent in numerous variations and in the Eastern Cape, the local Xhosa people and their ancestors have made it for centuries.Cave paintings in the area show the ancient San Bushmen sipping iQhilika some 25 000 years ago, and their knowledge has come down through the years to the local people.Making changes for the betterCambray explained his interest in mead succinctly: “They stole my bicycle“.He added: “I was a second-year student at Rhodes and needed to make some extra money for a new bicycle.” Through Leukes, he became involved with bees and beekeeping and through this, with mead production. When it opened its doors 11 years ago, Makana Meadery had a staff count of around 15 people. The meadery is proving that even small companies can make a profound impact on areas like unemployment, skills development, technology, sustainability and biodiversity.Makana is 50% owned by previously disadvantaged people, who now have a chance at a brighter future. The introduction of an extensive beekeeping programme enabled Makana staff to train no fewer than 400 unemployed people – some from as far away as the Congo, according to Cambray – in the delicate art of beekeeping. This has equipped them with life-changing skills that can be passed on from generation to generation and bring in an income for their families.Makana uses the indigenous Cape honey bee, Apis mellifera capensis, which occurs throughout the southern part of South Africa.“The beekeepers we’ve trained are all independent and we encourage them to sell their honey into the local market,” said Cambray. “If there is then any surplus, we buy it from them.”A demand for mead means a demand for bees. According to Cambray, bees provide a crucial ecological service not only to vegetation but also to the human food supply.“For instance, most canola farms keep three or four beehives per hectare as they help with the pollination process.”A single bee in a hive can travel up to three kilometres per trip to collect nectar and can visit on average 400 flowers per trip.“About 120 bees leave the hive every minute to do this and they do it for sometimes eight or nine hours a day,” said Cambray. In this case millions of flowers can be pollinated every day. This also means that the taste of the honey is never exactly the same, as the bees travel to different flowers all the time. So too, the flavours in mead have subtle variations from batch to batch. As with conventional wine, mead can be dry or sweet – the taste depends on how much honey is used during the fermentation process. The more honey, the sweeter the end result. But whatever the flavour and whatever the recipe, Cambray and his team are proving that even the harsh sting of a bee can leave a sweet taste on the lips.Refining the production processMead production is a time-consuming process and is often a labour of love rather than a pursuit of profit. The technological aspect is complicated as the fermentation process with honey takes longer than that of grapes or hops.Cambray has redeveloped and streamlined the process, with no ill effects on the final product, which has been hailed for its authentic taste by traditional iQhilika brewers.“All fermentation processes, be it mead or wine or beer, uses technology that is thousands of years old,” he said. “I just looked at it and thought about what would make it easier and then cut out areas where most problems arise.”His innovation has allowed the meadery to now produce up to 15 000 bottles of mead annually. In addition to the popular drink, Makana also produces mead vinegar, honey mead mustard, conventional honey, and honey-based jams and marmalades.Sustainable operationNot only is Makana facilitating a positive change in the community around them, it’s showing that this can be done without a negative impact on the environment. With the growing concerns of global warming and water shortages, Cambray and his team are making progress in the areas of sustainability and biodiversity. While even a small brewery can use over 150 litres of water to produce 1 litre of beer, mead production uses a mere four to six litres of water per litre of mead. The beverage also does not require the use of any cultivated agricultural land or resources such as irrigation. The honey used is usually collected from local bee populations in natural vegetation. Also, if the production process is carried out carefully, it can spur the growth of a wild bee population. This in turn causes natural forests and vegetation to proliferate. Therefore, when a bottle of mead is purchased, the consumer can rest assured that they are actively supporting the conservation of ecosystems and promoting sustainability. The future of Makana Meadery is looking green with Cambray’s plans to eventually use iQhilika bee-pollinated sunflower oil to transport the mead wherever it may need to go. By converting sunflower oil to biofuel, the meadery’s ecological footprint is lowered even further.A sawmill on the premises is used to provide wood for beehives, which are manufactured at Makana. More beehives, more honey, more mead. The wood is also used to make a variety of other products such as picnic tables and mead storage racks. Nothing is wasted – left-over pieces are used to make dog kennels and various sized chairs.Increasing demandThe local demand for mead varies from year to year – when the local demand is high, most of Makana’s mead is sold in the area and when the demand is low, it is exported, mostly to the US.The popularity of Makana’s mead varieties in the US is seen in the many awards the products have won. The Africa Herbal Blossom mead took the gold medal in 2006 and 2007 at the International Mead Convention held in Boulder, Colorado, while the spicy African Birds Eye Chilli mead won silver in its category.Although bee populations are shrinking in Europe and mead doesn’t seem to be as popular there, the hope is that African mead and all its different variations – as African regions have their own method of mead production – will begin fuelling a need for mead in Europe.last_img read more

Reinardt races to Cycle Challenge victory

first_imgThose overseas wins include the overall title in the Tour de Bretagne, the Ronde van Overijssel, the Circuit de Wallonie and the Ronde van Zeeland, as well as the points’ title in the Tour of Portugal. Little wonder then that he has been signed up by an overseas team. Laws, who recently signed with Momentum Toyota, South Africa’s leading women’s professional road race team, took the fight to the rest of the field, breaking away with 50 kilometres to go, and going on to win by over five minutes in a time of two hours, 39 minutes and 34 seconds. Excellent resultsThe MTN Qhubeka star’s results in 2012 have included winning the national time trial title, becoming only the second rider after his team-mate Arran Brown to win the Cycle Challenge and Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour in the same year, and 14 overseas victories. Fellow Brit, Catherine Williamson of team bizhub FCF claimed second place, with South African time trial champion, Cherise Stander (Momentum Toyota), the 2010 Cycle Challenge winner in third place in her last competitive road race for the foreseeable future. From next year she will follow in the footsteps of her husband, Burry, and concentrate on mountain biking. Women’s raceBritish road racing champion Sharon Laws, who was a controversial omission from the British team for the London Olympics, convincingly ended Ashley Moolman-Pasio’s bid to become the first rider to win the Argus, the South African Road Championship, the African Continental Championship and the Cycle Challenge in the same year. The Cycle Challenge was, however, the last race for Janse van Rensburg with MTN Qhubeka. After an excellent season, he has signed a two-year contract with the Netherlands-based Team Argos-Shimano. Second place went to Johann Rabie of Team Bonitas, two second behind the winner, with defending champion Arran Brown of MTN Qhubeka in third a further six seconds off the pace. Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio had said she was tired when she returned from the African Continental Cycling Championships on Burkina Faso on Wednesday, but she nonetheless managed fourth place ahead of Joanna van de Winkel, giving Momentum Toyota four of the top five finishers. ‘It was great to win’“It was great to win today for my new team. We went into the race with no chosen leader, but decided to make the pace as hard as possible. I was just fortunate that my move stuck and I was the one that could win today,” Laws said afterwards. It was an emotional victory for the 23-year-old, who crossed the finishing line in two hours, 10 minutes, and 19 seconds; he rode the race in memory of his father, who had passed away two weeks before the event. Over 25 000 riders took to the roads of Johannesburg on Sunday, with Reinardt Janse van Rensburg capturing the men’s title in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge and Sharon Laws becoming the first non-South African to win the women’s race. 20 November 2012 “Although I had a long solo ride, I must thank my teammates for their role in my win. It was most certainly very much a team success today.” “I’m not a great sprinter and breakaways suit me better. It wasn’t planned that I’d go so far out though, but when I realised I was making good progress over the hills and into a rather disconcerting headwind, I just kept at it. Clough insists Burton got their pride back

The Cards have previous experience with Alabama, Clemson, Miami and Tulsa, who all competed at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational three weeks ago. Following the Sunshine State Invitational, Louisville will make the first of two trips to Clemson with the Clemson Invitational on April 19-20. The Cardinals will compete in alternating weeks until the ACC Championships, also held at Clemson, on May 18. “We had the building blocks necessary to do better,” said head coach Derek Copeland. “This has been a big focus because we need to do well. Every boat needs to live up to their seeding.” On Friday, the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four boats will compete in heats against crews from Jacksonville, Kansas State, Miami, SMU and Tulsa. This marks the first time that Louisville has competed in this regatta, which takes place Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. “The team’s expectation is we can hold our own,” said Copeland. “We wanted a regatta in our time zone with extra water time to compete with teams similar to us.” Regatta Information center_img Live results from the regatta will be available on Twitter at @FIRARowing. Last season, Louisville’s major road regatta was at the Pac-12 Challenge at Stanford, but this year, the Cards opted to remain closer to home. First, the regatta offers another chance for many of the student-athletes’ families to watch them compete, including eight from Florida. Secondly, it offers the team the chance to fit in extra practice time on a championship-level course, although the team has been able to train consistently on the Ohio River this spring. At Oak Ridge, the Cards picked up one win as the varsity eight held off a late Crimson Tide charge to take their opening race of the weekend. Along with the win, the Cards took second place in seven additional races on the fast waters of Melton Lake. The number of kids who struggle with thoughts of s

first_imgThe number of kids who struggle with thoughts of suicide or who attempt to kill themselves is rising. New research, published Wednesday in Pediatrics, finds children ages 5 to 17 visited children’s hospitals for suicidal thoughts or attempts about twice as often in 2015 as in 2008.The study found kids of all ages are affected though increases were greatest for older adolescents. Lead author Gregory Plemmons, a pediatrician and researcher at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., says the study results confirmed what he had been seeing at the hospital. He says he hopes clinicians and families take note. “The No. 1 thing to take home is that it’s important to talk about this and important to ask about it,” he says. The findings line up with past data showing a steady increase in teen suicide over the past decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last year that a drop in adolescent suicide in the 1990s and early 2000s reversed course in 2008, though it has not yet reached peak levels seen in the 1980s. It’s not clear what has contributed to the increase, but the study noted the 2008 financial crisis may be one factor.Plemmons and his co-researchers examined billing data from 2008 to 2015 from a database of 49 children’s hospitals across the U.S. They included all emergency department encounters, stays for observation and inpatient hospitalizations at those hospitals. However, community hospitals were not included. The researchers turned up 115,856 visits for suicidal ideation or attempts, during the seven-year period. Such visits represented 0.7 percent of total children’s hospital visits in 2008, but by 2015 had increased to 1.8 percent of all visits. More than half the visits required at least one night of hospitalization, and nearly 1 in 7 required intensive care.Older teens were more likely to end up in the hospital and had the greater increase in hospital visits. About half of suicide-related hospital visits for the time studied were from teens ages 15 to 17, but 12- to 14-year-olds closely trailed them, making up 37 percent of visits. Children ages 5 to 11 made up the remaining 13 percent. One of the study’s most striking findings was a seasonal trend in hospital visits. Throughout the years, visits peaked in midfall and midspring and fell to the lowest point in the summer. “We knew there was an association with school seasons, but actually seeing that mapped out was surprising,” says Plemmons. It suggests a link with school pressures. “It really speaks to the stress and the strain at school,” says Dr. Robert Dicker, associate director of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, N.Y. “Kids appear to be under much more academic success to achieve and their perception of falling short.”Dicker, who was not involved in the study, noted possible influences from the media, particularly social media.Plemmons also drew attention to social media’s influence. “You’re becoming more disconnected and not having relationships with real people, and at the same time, you’re being fed a false distortion of what reality is, where everything looks great onscreen,” he says.Cyberbullying and sexting, he adds, could also be risk factors. “These kids have to deal with pressures that we didn’t deal with.”Other possible contributors noted in the study included earlier puberty in girls, since reaching puberty is a risk factor for suicide. Girls made up two-thirds of the hospital visits in the study period. But none of these possibilities is definitive. “This type of study is very good at revealing trends but cannot address causality,” says Dr. Laurel Williams, chief of psychiatry at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. Despite being the third-leading cause of death in adolescents, suicide is still relatively rare, making it harder to study causes, she says. But it is important to screen for depression and anxiety, she says. Her institution also uses validated screening tools to screen adolescents and is exploring teleconsultation strategies to help pediatricians manage cases if they feel underprepared or uncomfortable. “We know there are a lot of patients still out there who have clinical depression who are not accessing care,” Plemmons says, adding that it’s important for adults to identify resources in their area for struggling teens. Parents can start with their child’s primary care doctor. But the most important first step is one anyone can take.”The current best method for identifying risk is to ask,” Williams says. “Asking a young person how they are feeling, not just how they are doing, is essential. We need to give young people the time and space to talk about how they are feeling. This involves developing closer relationships over time, not something you can scramble at the last minute or only in moments of crisis.”Plemmons also emphasized the importance of talking to adolescents about the issue. “There’s still a huge stigma and anything you can do to destigmatize it helps,” he says, adding that a fear still exists among some pediatricians and parents that discussing suicide may suggest it to adolescents. “We know from literature that that’s not the case,” Plemmons says. “Talking about it can sometimes help reduce the risk.” If you or someone you know may be considering suicide, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (En Español: 1-888-628-9454; Deaf and Hard of Hearing: 1-800-799-4889) or the Crisis Text Line by texting 741741.
