GAA proposes changes to championship structure

first_imgReplays in all championship games will be abolished, unless it finishes level after extra-time. In Rounds 1, 2 and 3 of the qualifiers, a Division 3 or 4 side drawn against a Division 1 or 2 team will automatically be given home advantage. The format of the “A” and “B” sides to the qualifier draw will be eliminated. The proposed change will also ensure that 24 counties will be out of the championship by the 3rd week in July freeing up time for club matches. The All-Ireland Semi-Finals will be played over one weekend. They’ve proposed 4 rounds of qualifiers as normal, with the 4 winners of the Round 4 games joining the Provincial Champions in the Quarter-Finals. The Quarter Finals will feature 2 groups of 4 with 2 provincial champions joined by 2 Round 4 qualifiers with the top 2 in each Group advancing to the semi-finals. The format of the draws for the Quarter-Final group stage will see each side play at Croke Park once, at home once, and away once adding 8 games to the Championship.last_img
