Wellington Police officer facing possible assault, criminal damage charges in Wichita

first_imgSumner Newscow report — David Vandyke, a Wellington Police Department officer, has been issued a criminal complaint and notice to appear in Wichita Municipal Court for possible misdemeanor charges.According to the complaint Vandyke has been accused of “knowingly placing another person in reasonable apprehension of immediate bodily harm.” A Wichita Municipal Court Check advisor said Vandyke is likely to have his first court appearance at the end of October, but no specific time has been set.He could face an assault and willful criminal damage misdemeanor charge, but that will be up to a Wichita Municipal Court judge, the advisor said. In the complaint, Vandyke, who lives at 3309 S. Kessler in Wichita, is accused of “knowingly damaging a cell phone in which (another person) has an interest without his consent by: slapping the phone out of his hand and causing the phone to hit the wall and break apart, and said property had a value less than $1,000.”According to a report on the Wellington Daily News website, Vandyke has been suspended from the Wellington Police Department pending the outcome of the case.Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath was unavailable for comment at the time of this writing.Follow us on Twitter.
