Steve Smith, James Faulkner star as Australia live to fight another day

first_imgPakistan were knocked out of the ICC World Twenty20 2016 after their 21-run defeat to Australia at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium. Here’s what the two captains had to say at the post-match presentation ceremony. Shahid Afridi says Pakistan are not good enough at the moment to compete with top sides. Honestly speaking, we are not good enough. Bowlers gave too many runs in last 4-5 overs. I’ll go back home and then make a decision [about retirement]. I’ll do what’s best for the team. I want to thank the management, the players who have supported me. I want to thank the people of Kolkata who gave us a lot of support. Also want to thank the people of Kashmir who came down for supporting us. And thank you to the BCCI for their hospitality as well: Shahid Afridi Winning skipper Steve Smith is aware of the big game on Sunday. Usman has been batting beautifully and Finch came in and looked good as well. We need to win the remaining three games if we want to win the World Cup. The game against India is in two days time. Probably, we’ll see some footage and stuff. But tomorrow, we’ll just rest: Smith Pakistan innings:The game between Australia and India on Sunday is the virtual quarter-final now. Australia and India are tied at four points each. Australia have a better net run-rate than India though.  Nothing went Pakistan’s way today. Usman Khawaja hurt them early in the match. Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell shared a 74-run partnership to make sure Australia total was too good in the end for Pakistan’s batting unit. Sharjeel, Latif and Akmal showed signs of regression for Pakistan but they weren’t able to ride on individual efforts. Another bad day for Pakistan and their skipper Afridi in the tournament. Let’s wait for what he has to say at the presentation ceremony today. advertisement18.20 IST: Two runs off the last ball. Pakistan’s campaign at this year’s ICC World Twenty20 comes to an end. Faulkner five-for makes sure Australia live to fight another day. Pakistan fell short of the target by 21 runs. PAK 172/8 25 from 2.. 18.16 IST: OUT! Another one, two in two for Faulkner. He now has taken five wickets in this innings. Brilliant effort from the all-rounder. He has ended Pakistan’s hopes here. Wahab Riaz was his latest victim. PAK 164/8 18.14 IST: OUT! Sarfraz Ahmed didn’t trouble the scorers much. A wicket off the first ball. Pakistan now need five sixes from now on. You never know what would happen after what we saw on Wednesday. PAK 164/7 18.13 IST: 14 from the 19th over. Malik gives Pakistan a slim chance after hitting two boundaries off the last two balls. Pakistan now need 30 from 6 balls. PAK 164/6 in 19 overs. 18.09 IST: No hat-trick there for Pakistan. Nevertheless, a brilliant 18th over from the Australian all-rounder, only five runs came off it. Malik is Pakistan’s only hope now. Sarfraz Khan has joined him. Pakistan need 44 from 12. Looks impossible. PAK 150/6 in 18 overs.18.08 IST: OUT! Two in two for Faulkner. He is on-a-hat-trick. Pakistan lose Imad Wasim for 0. It’s all going down for Pakistan. PAK 147/6 in 17.4 overs. 18.06 IST: OUT! Faulkner gets Latif for 46 off 41. Not a good time to lose a wicket, to lose an in-form batsman. Pakistan still need 47 runs from 15 balls. PAK 147/5 in 17.3 overs. 18.02 IST: Latif and Malik have stitched a 35-run partnership so far. However, they are not able to keep up to the asking rate. PAK 145/4 in 17 overs. They still need 49 runs from 18 balls.  17.58 IST: Malik and Latif are crucial to Pakistan’s chances here. Malik hit Zampa for a big six in the last over and is already on 13 off 7 balls. PAK 135/4 in 16 overs chasing 194.  17.54 IST: Pakistan are 125/4 in 15 overs. They need 69 from 30 which is looking a bit tall for their batting. However, Latif is in good form and Malik can come in handy in these situations.  Pakistan’s required run-rate is steadily climbing up. They are losing batsmen at regular intervals. They now need 80 runs at 13.33 an over.  Zampa has already two wickets. Shoaib Malik joins Latif now17.48 IST: OUT! Afridi dissapoints once again. After hitting leg-spinner Zampa for a six, he falls in the next ball. The skipper was able to manage only 14. PAK 110/4 in 13.2 overs. 17.41 IST: Four dot balls,  a single and a six. Glenn Maxwell completes a decent 12th over. Afridi hits the first six of his innings, smashes Maxwell to the long on boundary. PAK  94/3 in 12 overs.17.37 IST: Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi is the new man in. Will this be last game? Here’s what he had to say about his retirement earlier today   advertisement17.35 IST: OUT! Big wicket for Australia. The leg-spinner Zampa removes Umar Akmal for 32. The young man showed promise but plays a slog sweep only to see the ball crashing into the middle stump. Australia are celebrating big here. They know the importance of the wicket. PAK 85/3 in 10.3 overs. 17.33 IST: Umar Akmal and Khalid Latif have stitched a 43-run partnership from just 28 balls. This is good batting from these two right-handers. They are keeping Pakistan in the hunt. On this Mohali wicket, you need to give some time and then start playing your strokes and these two have exactly done that. PAK 83/2 in 10.1 overs 17.25 IST:  Adam Zampa bowls a decent first over, concedes just four runs and has put brakes to Pakistan’s scoring rate. Pakistan’s chances depend on how their batsmen handle the tricky leg-spinner. PAK 62/2 in 8 overs17.23 IST: Akmal doesn’t wait to hit the big shots. He has taken Watson to the cleaners with a six and two boundaries in the seventh over. Watson looked 17 off it. PAK 58/2 in 7 overs. 17.18 IST: Umar Akmal joins Latif in the middle  17.14 IST: Sharjeel Khan (30 off 19) fails to convert another start. He drags one off Faulkner and walks back the hut. Pakistan slip to 40/2 in 5.3 overs. That was a big, big wicket for Australia.  17.11 IST: Pakistan have lost Ahmed Shehzad inside the first five overs. Sharjeel Khan is keeping this chase interesting with 30 off 17 balls. He has hit five boundaries already. Sharjeel gave Pakistan a good start against New Zealand also. He is one Pakistan batsman to keep an eye on. PAK 36/1 in 5 overs. Australia innings: 16.31 IST: Wahab Riaz says the pitch will remain the same in the second innings and that their team has the firepower to gun down 193. It’s going to be a tough task for Pakistan though. Australian attack looks settled and leg-spinner Adam Zampa is a big threat to Pakistan’s chances today.  Pakistan need 194 to win. They need to score more than nine runs an over to be on the winning side today. 16.30 IST: Australia have ended with a massive 193/4 on board in 20 overs. Watson hit two more boundaries of Amir’s last over to hurt Pakistan more. He finishes with 44 from 21 balls while Smith was ice-cool and scored 61 from just 43 balls. These two stitched a crucial 74-run stand from 38 balls. Imad Wasim and Wahab Riaz picked up two wickets each for Australia. The bowling card doesn’t look impressive otherwise.    16.24 IST: Watson and Smith have scored at a rapid pace to push Australia towards a massive total here. These two have contributed 60 runs off just 32 balls. Serious power-hitting here. AUS 179 /4 in 19 overs. How much can they get from the next six balls? Amir to bowl the final over.   16.16 IST: Fifty for Steve Smith, his second in T20 international cricket. He has taken Australia to a position of strength from 57/3. A captain’s knock this. AUS 154/4 in 17.2 overs 16.15 IST: Watson smashes Amir for a six and a four off successive deliveries. The pacer was thrashed for 17 runs in the last over. AUS 152/4 in 17 overs.advertisement16.10 IST: Eight runs off Wahab’s over. Smith (42) is nearing a half-century. Shane Watson has joined the skipper. AUS 135/4 in 16 overs. They will be hoping to get close to 180 from here. Pakistan have a steep chase if Australia manage to get there. 16.04 IST: Three runs off Afridi’s final over. He wasn’t able to pick up a wicket but didn’t concede much either. AUS 127/4 in 15 overs 16.00 IST: OUT! Imad Wasim strikes, ends the dangerous Maxwell’s show in Mohali. A 62-run stand comes to an end. AUS 119/4 in 13.4 overs15.57 IST: This is turning out to be Glenn Maxwell show in Mohali. He has already hit 30 runs off 17 balls and is looking good for more. Sami leaked 17 runs in his last over.  AUS 112/315.48 IST: Afridi was taken to the cleaners by Smith and Maxwell. This is developing to be a good partnership (34* off 24 balls) for Australia.  AUS 90/315.45: IST: Australia 77/3 off 10 overs: Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell are putting up a slow but steady stand. Smith has to hang in there for Australia. 15.38 IST: Australia 64/3 off 8 overs; this has been an exciting start to the game. The Aussies still have plenty of firepower. Smith and Maxwell can take it away from Pakistan in a matter of a few overs. There’s Shane Watson to come too.  15.36 IST: WICKET! Imad Wasim has removed Finch (15) and Australia are in a spot of bother at 57/3 off 7.2 overs. Glenn Maxwell joins Smith in the middle 15.32 IST: Afridi in the attack with Australia 52/2 off six overs. Finch and skipper Steve Smith in the middle for Australia  15.26 IST: WICKET! Wahab, you beauty! He is working up serious pace here. He has now seen off the dangerous Warner as Australia slip to 42/2 in 5.1 overs 15.20 IST: FOUR! Warner off the mark with a boundary off Wahab; Australia 32/1 off four overs 15.18 IST: WICKET! Wahab has the last laugh, removes Khwaja with a peach of a delivery. Australia are 28/1 off 3.4 overs as David Warner joins Finch in the middle 15.16 IST: SIX! Wow, that was a top shot by Khwaja. Wahab Riaz, coming back into the team, has been greeted in the most unpleasant style here. 15.15 IST: Australia race away to 21/0 off three overs. Pakistan would be feeling the heat. 15.11 IST: Amir will continue. He has looked sharp and fast yet again. Handling him will be a challenge for Australia. 15.10 IST: Expensive over from Sami after a good start by Amir at the other end. Usman Khwaja hammered two boundaries off the second over as Australia raced away to 16/0. 15:04 IST: Australia are 5/0 after the first over from Mohammad Amir. Remember, this is a must-win game for Pakistan. 14:34 IST: Australia won the toss and elected to bat vs Pakistan. Aaron Finch is back for the Aussies! They have also added Josh Hazlewood in the playing XI. Pakistan have recalled the aggressive Wahab Riaz. Here are the playing XIs:Australia: UT Khawaja, AJ Finch, DA Warner, SPD Smith (Captain), SR Watson, GJ Maxwell, JP Faulkner, PM Nevill (WK), A Zampa, NM Coulter-Nile, JR HazlewoodPakistan: Ahmed Shehzad, Sharjeel Khan, Rashid Latif, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed (WK), Shahid Afridi (Captain), Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad SamiHello and welcome to the LIVE updates of the Australia vs Pakistan match being played in Mohali.Pitch report: Wasim Akram reckons the strip to be a batting one with bit of grass that will bind the wicket well. Moreover, the pitch likely to remain the same for the entire match.Preview: Their path to the semifinals looking relatively easier in comparison, Australia will fancy their chances when they lock horns with a struggling Pakistan side whose hopes hangs by a thread.Pakistan have struggled so far in the tournament but Australia are in no mood to take them lightly in a must-win match for both teams. With two losses from three games, Pakistan’s chances of progressing in the tournament are slim. Even their coach Waqar Younis thinks the team doesn’t deserve to qualify for the semifinals with the way it has played.Australia, on the other hand, have their own issues to sort out after the loss to New Zealand and a not so convincing win against Bangladesh. A win for Australia will certainly end Pakistan’s sorry campaign in the tournament and make their final league match against hosts India a virtual quarterfinal with New Zealand already qualifying from the group.last_img read more

Special honour to become Manchester United manager: Jose Mourinho

first_imgManchester United have appointed Jose Mourinho as manager on athree-year contract with an option to stay on until at least 2020, the PremierLeague club said on Friday. The 53-year-old Portuguese replaces Dutchman Louis van Gaalwhose two-year reign at Old Trafford ended on Monday when he was sacked twodays after United won the FA Cup.’JOSE IS THE BEST'”Jose is quite simply the best manager in the game today. He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, ofcourse, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here,”United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said in a statement.”I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome him toManchester United. His track record of success is ideal to take the clubforward.”Mourinho, sacked by Chelsea in December, had been widelyexpected to succeed Van Gaal and his agent Jorge Mendes met United officials onTuesday to discuss personal terms. The talks with the former Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madridmanager became protracted, however, when it emerged that Chelsea, who sackedMourinho in December, still owned his name as a trademark. Now the stage is set for the marriage of two of world soccer’sbiggest names – Mourinho, the manager who collects trophies wherever he goes, and Manchester United, England’s most successful club and a global giant.’SPECIAL HONOUR FOR ME’ “To become Manchester United manager is a special honour inthe game,” Mourinho said in the statement.”It is a club known and admired throughout the world. Thereis a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.advertisement”I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it hashosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed arapport with the United fans.”I’m looking forward to being their manager and enjoyingtheir magnificent support in the coming years.”JOSE’S GLORIOUS PASTIn two spells at Chelsea, the Portuguese won the Premier Leaguethree times – including their first league title for 50 years – and both the FACup and League Cup.He also won league championships in his first seasons at Portoand Inter Milan before helping Real Madrid to their first La Liga crown in fouryears.By their own high standards, United have struggled since AlexFerguson retired three years ago, never finishing higher than fourth in theEnglish standings.Their fifth-place finish under Van Gaal this season meant theyfailed to qualify for the Champions League for the second time since Fergusonleft.LONE SILVERWARE FOR VAN GAALVan Gaal did win the FA Cup – the first time United had liftedthe trophy in 12 years – but due to widespread condemnation of the style offootball his team played it was not enough to save him. There are reservations about Mourinho’s preferred style of play, with former United striker Eric Cantona saying the club should have optedinstead for Pep Guardiola, who is taking over as manager of Manchester City. But other former players, including goalkeeper Peter Schmeicheland former captain Steve Bruce, believe he will revive the club’s fortunes.Mourinho, who has won the Champions League with Porto and InterMilan, will lead United in the Europa League next season.last_img read more

Bayern Completes Arsenal’s Euro Misery with Another 5-1 Win

first_imgBayern’s Thiago Alcantara, right, is challenged by Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka during the Champions League round of 16 second leg soccer match between Arsenal and Bayern Munich. (AP Photo/Frank Augstein)And there was no sympathy from Bayern, with the five-time European champions joining in the derision by tweeting: “What time is it? Yep, it’s ten to!”The night’s other game saw the first-leg score replicated as Real Madrid beat Napoli 3-1 to reach the last eight for a seventh successive season. But Bayern enjoyed such an emphatic advantage that Arsenal had an uphill task. A glimmer of hope, though, came in the 20th minute when Theo Walcott beat goalkeeper Manuel Neuer at his near post.Nothing went Arsenal’s way after that. Walcott was denied a potential penalty and then Koscielny was dismissed after the referee initially prepared to show the captain a yellow card for bringing down Robert Lewandowski 10 minutes into the second half.“The game was difficult until the penalty,” said Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti, who is looking to win the Champions League with a third different club after successes with AC Milan and Real Madrid. “We were too open. They pushed as we expected. We were not so clear with the ball as we usually are.”Arsenal didn’t do itself any favors, going into freefall as Bayern tore Wenger’s side apart with a clinical attacking masterclass. Arjen Robben netted after a poor clearance by goalkeeper David Ospina in the 68th minute, and Douglas Costa added another in the 78th before Arturo Vidal scored twice in the space of five minutes.Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski, second right, celebrates with teammates after scoring a penalty during the Champions League round of 16 second leg soccer match between Arsenal and Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium in London, Tuesday, March 7, 2017. (AP Photo/Frank Augstein)“Bayern can be a good side but tonight they can also say thank you to the decisions of the referee,” Wenger said. “It leaves me very angry, very frustrated … (the referee) killed the game.”As Bayern marched into the quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive year, Arsenal cannot be certain it will even be back in the competition next season. Not only are the Gunners far from winning the Premier League for the first time since 2004 but they are out of the top four. The objectives are clearer for Bayern: collecting a fifth successive Bundesliga title and winning the Champions League for the first time since its Wembley success in London in 2013.“We just want to keep chugging along,” Neuer said. “We don’t intend on letting up.”TweetPinShare0 Shares LONDON – With a second 5-1 rout in three weeks, Bayern Munich completed Arsenal’s humiliation on a night of protests against manager Arsene Wenger.Whether Wenger gets a chance to return to the Champions League next season remains unclear, as his latest contract will expire at the end of this season after 21 years at the club. His team’s heaviest-ever loss at the Emirates Stadium, completing a 10-2 aggregate loss on Tuesday as the German champions reached the quarterfinals, will only heighten demands by pockets of supporters for Wenger to go.Asked if he will manage Arsenal again in the Champions League, Wenger replied: “I don’t know … I am here to talk about football not my future.”It is Wenger’s failure to deliver Arsenal’s first European Cup that has diminished his standing among fans who once lauded him as a coaching revolutionary. For the seventh consecutive season, Arsenal has exited the Champions League in the Round of 16 and it has still only reached the final once, back in 2006.Wenger deflected questions about his own future by reprimanding Tuesday’s referee for what the Frenchman called “unexplainable and scandalous” decisions.last_img read more

England Rises Again, Greece and Belgium Slumps in Nations League Drama

first_imgGENEVA (AP) — England surged into the UEFA Nations League finals tournament on Sunday, and Belgium threw away its place in a stunning 5-2 loss at Switzerland. On a day of come-from-behind wins and twisting fortunes for the World Cup’s beaten semifinalists, England edged Croatia 2-1 to avenge defeat when the teams met in Russia in July.England had to beat Croatia to advance over group leader Spain and trailed late, before Jesse Lingard leveled in the 78th and captain Harry Kane got the decisive goal in the 85th.Belgium, which finished third in Russia, seemed certain to join England and host Portugal in the inaugural Final Four of world soccer’s newest tournament in June. The top-ranked team still needs a trophy to back up its status and eased into a quick 2-0 lead against Switzerland.Needing to score at least four to advance, the Swiss got three by halftime and added two more later to shock the Belgians.“Too many individual errors. I have no words,” Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld said.England’s Harry Kane, center, celebrates after scoring his side’s second goal during the UEFA Nations League soccer match between England and Croatia at Wembley stadium in London, Sunday Nov. 18, 2018. (AP Photo/Rui Vieira)The group was settled on a head-to-head tiebreaker with both teams on nine points. Switzerland’s three-goal margin outweighed Belgium’s 2-1 win in Brussels last month.Sunday’s dramatic games between top 10-ranked teams added to the strong impression made by the first Nations League.UEFA created the competition — amid some skepticism given the busy soccer calendar — to replace mostly meaningless and unpopular international friendly games. It gives unheralded national teams in the lower tiers a route to qualify for the European Championship through a subsequent playoff round. At the top, the best national teams get guaranteed games against each other and fight for a trophy in the odd-numbered years between World Cups and Euros.Portugal, England and Switzerland will be joined in the Final Four by either France or the Netherlands. The Dutch will advance if they get at least a draw on Monday in Germany, which has already been relegated to the second tier. The Nations League Final Four draw takes place Dec. 3 in Dublin.BELGIUM COLLAPSEBeaten by France in the World Cup semifinals, Belgium won the third-place game against England in Russia and made a smooth start to the Nations League. Many thought an overdue trophy could come next year for the so-called golden generation led by Eden Hazard, though missing the injured Kevin De Bruyne on Sunday. Not now.Thorgan Hazard scored after 66 seconds and 17 minutes in Lucerne but, by halftime, Ricardo Rodriguez scored a penalty and forward Haris Seferovic struck twice to bring the Swiss within one goal of advancing. They got two more, both from headers gifted by poor Belgian marking.Defender Nico Elvedi scored to make up for a bad mistake gifting Hazard his early opener, and Seferovic clinched his first international hat trick in the 84th, winning over home fans who are often criticizing him.ENGLAND RISINGEngland started a tough three-team group with a home loss against Spain, and trailed again at Wembley Stadium on Sunday when Andrej Kramaric scored in the 57th. That result would have been enough for Croatia to advance, despite its opening 6-0 rout by Spain in September.Things can change fast in the rapid-fire Nations League groups, and England scored twice late on to win the group and condemn Croatia to relegation into the second tier.“I’ve never seen (Wembley) like this in an England shirt,” said Kane, captain of an England team riding a wave of acclaim and affection at home under coach Gareth Southgate.BELARUS ADVANCESIn League D, Belarus sealed winning Group 2 with a sixth straight shutout in a 2-0 win at San Marino, making Luxembourg’s 1-1 draw at Moldova immaterial.Belarus joins Georgia in being promoted to League C in two years’ time, and taking their places in the League D playoffs in March 2020.Those playoffs featuring the four fourth-tier group winners will send one of Europe’s lowest-ranked teams to the 2020 European Championship tournament. The other two playoff entries are decided Monday and Tuesday, with Macedonia and Kosovo currently leading their groups. In other games Sunday, Austria won 2-1 at Northern Ireland in a League B group already won by Bosnia-Herzegovina.In a League C group, Finland had already won promotion and Estonia was already relegated before the final round of games Sunday ended with Hungary beating Finland 2-0, and Greece losing 1-0 at home to Estonia.___By GRAHAM DUNBAR , AP Sports WriterAssociated Press writer Raf Casert in Brussels contributed to this reportTweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Father of Humboldt Bronco player got apology in tearful meeting with truck

first_imgMELFORT, Sask. — The father of a player killed in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash says he thinks meeting face-to-face with the truck driver who caused the collision was a powerful moment in both of their lives.Scott Thomas, whose son Evan died in the April 6 crash, said both he and Jakirat Singh Sidhu cried when the two met privately at Sidhu’s sentencing hearing this week.  “It was a very powerful, very emotional 15 minutes,” said Thomas. “There were lots of tears on both our parts.“He said exactly what he said in court … ‘I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.’”Thomas was sitting in court in Melfort, Sask., Wednesday when Sidhu’s brother tapped him on the knee and asked if Thomas would meet with their family after the hearing ended for the day.“We went into a small room in the back,” Thomas told The Canadian Press in an interview Thursday.Thomas had frequently said he would like to meet with the truck driver. He said Sidhu asked him how he could make it right for his family.“I said, ‘So far, you’ve done everything that’s in your power,’” Thomas recalled. “He pled guilty, he took away the possibility of a long, drawn-out trial. He ended the proceedings in a pretty short and quick and efficient manner and definitely saved our families a lot of grief going forward.“In his words, he can’t do anything to make it better, but he can stop proceedings that make it worse. That’s what he did. He’s already taken steps in that direction.”Thomas said he accepted Sidhu’s apology.“Absolutely,” said Thomas. “It was a powerful moment in both of our lives, I think. It’s what I had asked for.”Ninety victim impact statements were submitted from family members over three days. They cried as they spoke of their unending grief for those who died and their frustration for those forever scarred. Some said they can forgive Sidhu, while others said they are too angry.Crown prosecutor Thomas Healey told court that he admired the ability to forgive, but that actions must have consequences. He said that while there has been no case like it before in Canada, a sentence of 10 years with a 10-year driving prohibition would be appropriate. The defence made no specific sentence recommendation but cited other dangerous driving penalties stretching from 1 1/2 to 4 1/2 years behind bars.Thomas said he wouldn’t want to be in the judge’s position of having to determine Sidhu’s sentence.“There’s definitely some parts of our conversation I am still not talking about, but the range of human tragedy in this is unbelievable,” said Thomas. “Any time I think I can’t get any deeper into this, something happens to continually break my heart.”Sitting through the victim impact statements was sometimes harder than the days after the crash, he said.“A couple of Mr. Sidhu’s family members were in the meeting with us and you could see the pain in their faces. So many families on so many levels.“From the 29 people on the bus to the billet families to the first responders who were there. There’s thousands and thousands of people who were impacted by this and every one of them has a unique story. It’s unbelievable.”Thomas said his strongest feelings in the case are reserved for a system that allowed Sidhu on the road with little experience and even less training.“If I harbour long lasting hard feelings toward anybody it’s toward the company that employed him … the trucking industry that allowed this to happen and the governments that allowed a man like him to be behind the wheel,” Thomas said. “I have a horrible feeling there are hundreds of others who are trained just as poorly out on the road right now. He thought he was just doing his job.”Provincial court Judge Inez Cardinal said she will hand down her sentence March 22.“However this happens, there’s no winners here,” said Thomas.“There’s going to be losers. No matter how that decision comes down, a whole bunch more people are going to lose.”— By Colette Derworiz in Edmonton. The Canadian Presslast_img read more

Will Ferrell To Host Massive Charity Desert Showdown

first_imgWill Ferrell is ready to bring the heat to the Desert Showdown, heading to the desert to commemorate the greatest (and most competitive!) 10th Anniversary of charity tennis and golf yet!Hosted by Will Ferrell, and held at the world famous La Quinta Resort & Club, the event has expanded to two days this year to include “The Will Powered Golf Classic”, a golf tournament unlike any other, exclusive post-round cocktail reception and celebrity entertainment.Leading into the neighboring BNP Paribas Open, the two-day event will benefit Cancer For College, a 501c3, non-profit organization that provides college scholarships for cancer survivors. Since 1993, the charity has granted nearly $2 million to more than 1,000 cancer survivors. To kick off the event on Monday, March 3, 2014, “The 21st Annual Will Powered Golf Classic” will take place on at the renowned Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, CA. The tournament will be played in a shamble format with planned ceremonial tee off at 12 noon featuring Ferrell and Cancer for College Founder Craig Pollard. Following the golf, there will be a private evening reception with hosted bar and hors d’oeuvres at the gorgeous Big Horn Golf Club pool area adjacent to the clubhouse.March 4th, 2014, marks Day 2 and the 10th Anniversary of the Desert Smash, and tennis portion of the Showdown. The day kicks off with The Desert Smash Pro/Celebrity-Am Tennis Tournament, where donating amateurs pay to play with celebrity players and WTA/ATP Tour Pros. Following the Pro/Celebrity-Am Tournament, the fan favorite, Pro-Tennis Exhibition will kick off at 2:15pm on La Quinta’s intimate Stadium Court. This sell-out event, is notorious for bringing together some of the world’s best professional tennis players with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars for fun, entertaining tennis in addition to several exciting live auction items auctioned off with the help of the players.Early players scheduled to appear at this year’s exhibition include: loyal Desert Smasher’s ATP World No. 2 Novak Djokovic, and 2013 Australian Open Doubles Champions and ATP World No. 1 Doubles Team Bob & Mike Bryan. Star players that have participated in the past include: WTA World No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki, Andre Agassi, Stefanie Graf, Marat Safin, Victoria Azarenka and Mardy Fish. Last year’s big celebrity battle with Novak Djokovic & Jeremy Piven vs. RedFoo and Mardy Fish was an entertaining, fun match that the crowd loved!Ferrell’s reasoning for his involvement in the Smash: “Cancer for College is an amazing cause. To see these cancer survivors realize their dream of a college education is inspiring. You know what else is inspiring? Me embarrassing Kevin Spacey on a tennis court in front of a thousand people. Those Academy Awards aren’t going to help him one bit when I’m raining fire on him from the baseline. It’s going to be a sight to behold. If an exhibition of pure athletic prowess does not make you want to give to this great cause, I don’t know what will.”Kevin Spacey will definitely be bringing the heat to the desert, having been training for months with premier coaches for his Pro/Celeb match against Ferrell. He sounds off taunting, “Will, I have long admired you, as I hope you know; but there will be no mercy in Palm Springs. I have taken this assignment like the greatest method actor who ever walked the face of the boards of the most inspired playhouse of all time… Za Actor’s Studio (and not just Inside but Outside too!) I’m ready, excited and very, very pumped to head out on the court and KILL YOU AT THE NET!!!!!”The Desert Smash Celebrity/Pro-Am Tournament is arguably one of the country’s best, composed of currently ranked WTA and ATP Tour players and some of the best known celebrity players. Past participants include: Stan Wawrinka, Ivan Ljubicic, Dinara Safina, Ernests Gulbis, Daniela Hantuchova, Paul Henri Mathieu, Xavier Malisse, James Blake, Jack Sock and Grand Slam Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova. Each year, the Desert Smash attracts both celebrity and tennis fans who flock to La Quinta to rub elbows with the world’s best tennis players. Celebrities scheduled to appear this year include event host and “Anchorman” star Will Ferrell, two-time Oscar winner and current House of Cards star Kevin Spacey, Kaley Cuoco (Big Bang Theory), Justin Chambers (Grey’s Anatomy), Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy, Brave), Timothy Olyphant (Justified, Live Free or Die Hard), RedFoo (LMFAO), Jeremy Piven (Entourage, Old School), Lance Bass and Boris Kodjoe.Past celebrity attendees included: Michael B. Jordan, Christian Slater, Gavin Rossdale, Gwen Stefani, Ryan Kwanten, Joe Pesci, Justin Chambers, Timothy Olyphant, Boris Kodjoe, Michael Vartan, Lance Bass, Joanna Garcia, Eliza Dushku, Jennifer Morrison, and Kirk Fox.Capping off an epic two days of fundraising and tennis, the celebration will continue into the night with the 10th Anniversary Desert Smash Player Party, which will give supporters and attendees the chance to rub elbows with both Hollywood celebrities and tennis stars while supporting Cancer for College through an exciting live auction all the while enjoying cocktails, a fun selection of food and a live musical performance by Nelly and Boyz II Men.Ferrell notes: “This event is going to be huge. I believe, between the golf and tennis alone, we’re expecting over 12 million people at the Desert Showdown this year. It might be a record for attendance. It’s gonna make Coachella look like a pancake breakfast. Look, I’m not going to sugarcoat it. It’s going to be a lot of work, but there’s nothing easy about cancer. It can devastate a family physically, emotionally and financially. It’s what makes Cancer for College so important. They make a college education a reality for these survivors who have been through so much. Helping these families after all they have been through is the absolute least we can do.”Find out more about the events here.last_img read more

A boost to Sanders

first_imgChicago Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot’s overwhelming victory was a message by the city’s voters Tuesday that they want an overhaul and makeover of City Hall and that they want to trash the entrenched political machine that has ruled the city for so long. The nation’s third largest city is now the largest American city ever to elect a black woman mayor. Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor, never held elective office until now. She won the election by besting Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle who, herself, served many years on the City Council. More than any candidate in recent times, Lightfoot racked up support in every single section of the city. She won in each of the city’s 50 wards. She had the support of Revolution Now, the progressive group founded by supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders. She will be sworn in on May 20 and on that day joins a group of seven other black women serving as mayors in large U.S. cities including Atlanta and New Orleans. After Jane Byrne, she becomes the second woman to serve as mayor of Chicago. Lightfoot and Preckwinkle, also an African American, say they are working to heal some of the differences between them and some of the divisions in the progressive community which saw unions and other organisations divided in whom they supported. Preckwinkle was perceived by many voters as having too close a connection to the old political machine and Lightfoot was criticised for not being strong enough in her prosecution of police misconduct. The other historical aspect of the elections is that avowed socialists won four additional seats on the City Council by the time polls closed. Many of the socialist aldermen are women of colour. Three aldermanic hopefuls backed by the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America won seats in the runoffs. In the 20th Ward Jeanette Taylor, with 60 per cent of the vote, grabbed the seat held by indicted Willie Cochran. In the 25th Ward, Byron Sigcho-Lopez, with 54 per cent of the vote, took the seat long held by Danny Solis. Solis was the powerful chair of the city’s Zoning Commission. In the 40th Ward, Andre Vasquez defeated the nine-term incumbent Pat O’Connor with 54 per cent of the vote. A fourth Democratic Socialists of America candidate, Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez, was leading by 64 votes with all precincts reporting. The winner will be determined when all the absentee ballots are counted and a recount is conducted. All of the new socialist aldermen will join Carlos-Ramirez-Rosa, a socialist incumbent in the 35th ward and newcomer Daniel LaSpata, another socialist incumbent. Both of them had won in the first-round elections in February. The results mean that in a 50-seat city council at least 10 per cent are members of the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America. “As democratic socialists, we’re ready to build a Chicago for all of us, not just a wealthy few,” said Lucie Macias, one of two Chicago DSA co-chairs. “Our Chicago for All platform is based on three main planks: housing for all, sanctuary for all, and education for all. We’re excited to build a socialist caucus in city hall to carry out this agenda and fight for Chicago’s working class.” The Chicago victories in the aldermanic races reflect a national trend of victories by DSA candidates. The most well-known, of course, was the victory in New York of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. DSA has already endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders for president. Sanders carried the 1st, 25th, 33rd, 35th, and 40th wards in the 2016 Democratic primary in Chicago.(Courtesy: People’s World Views expressed are strictly personal)last_img read more
