Will Ferrell is ready to bring the heat to the Desert Showdown, heading to the desert to commemorate the greatest (and most competitive!) 10th Anniversary of charity tennis and golf yet!Hosted by Will Ferrell, and held at the world famous La Quinta Resort & Club, the event has expanded to two days this year to include “The Will Powered Golf Classic”, a golf tournament unlike any other, exclusive post-round cocktail reception and celebrity entertainment.Leading into the neighboring BNP Paribas Open, the two-day event will benefit Cancer For College, a 501c3, non-profit organization that provides college scholarships for cancer survivors. Since 1993, the charity has granted nearly $2 million to more than 1,000 cancer survivors. To kick off the event on Monday, March 3, 2014, “The 21st Annual Will Powered Golf Classic” will take place on at the renowned Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, CA. The tournament will be played in a shamble format with planned ceremonial tee off at 12 noon featuring Ferrell and Cancer for College Founder Craig Pollard. Following the golf, there will be a private evening reception with hosted bar and hors d’oeuvres at the gorgeous Big Horn Golf Club pool area adjacent to the clubhouse.March 4th, 2014, marks Day 2 and the 10th Anniversary of the Desert Smash, and tennis portion of the Showdown. The day kicks off with The Desert Smash Pro/Celebrity-Am Tennis Tournament, where donating amateurs pay to play with celebrity players and WTA/ATP Tour Pros. Following the Pro/Celebrity-Am Tournament, the fan favorite, Pro-Tennis Exhibition will kick off at 2:15pm on La Quinta’s intimate Stadium Court. This sell-out event, is notorious for bringing together some of the world’s best professional tennis players with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars for fun, entertaining tennis in addition to several exciting live auction items auctioned off with the help of the players.Early players scheduled to appear at this year’s exhibition include: loyal Desert Smasher’s ATP World No. 2 Novak Djokovic, and 2013 Australian Open Doubles Champions and ATP World No. 1 Doubles Team Bob & Mike Bryan. Star players that have participated in the past include: WTA World No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki, Andre Agassi, Stefanie Graf, Marat Safin, Victoria Azarenka and Mardy Fish. Last year’s big celebrity battle with Novak Djokovic & Jeremy Piven vs. RedFoo and Mardy Fish was an entertaining, fun match that the crowd loved!Ferrell’s reasoning for his involvement in the Smash: “Cancer for College is an amazing cause. To see these cancer survivors realize their dream of a college education is inspiring. You know what else is inspiring? Me embarrassing Kevin Spacey on a tennis court in front of a thousand people. Those Academy Awards aren’t going to help him one bit when I’m raining fire on him from the baseline. It’s going to be a sight to behold. If an exhibition of pure athletic prowess does not make you want to give to this great cause, I don’t know what will.”Kevin Spacey will definitely be bringing the heat to the desert, having been training for months with premier coaches for his Pro/Celeb match against Ferrell. He sounds off taunting, “Will, I have long admired you, as I hope you know; but there will be no mercy in Palm Springs. I have taken this assignment like the greatest method actor who ever walked the face of the boards of the most inspired playhouse of all time… Za Actor’s Studio (and not just Inside but Outside too!) I’m ready, excited and very, very pumped to head out on the court and KILL YOU AT THE NET!!!!!”The Desert Smash Celebrity/Pro-Am Tournament is arguably one of the country’s best, composed of currently ranked WTA and ATP Tour players and some of the best known celebrity players. Past participants include: Stan Wawrinka, Ivan Ljubicic, Dinara Safina, Ernests Gulbis, Daniela Hantuchova, Paul Henri Mathieu, Xavier Malisse, James Blake, Jack Sock and Grand Slam Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova. Each year, the Desert Smash attracts both celebrity and tennis fans who flock to La Quinta to rub elbows with the world’s best tennis players. Celebrities scheduled to appear this year include event host and “Anchorman” star Will Ferrell, two-time Oscar winner and current House of Cards star Kevin Spacey, Kaley Cuoco (Big Bang Theory), Justin Chambers (Grey’s Anatomy), Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy, Brave), Timothy Olyphant (Justified, Live Free or Die Hard), RedFoo (LMFAO), Jeremy Piven (Entourage, Old School), Lance Bass and Boris Kodjoe.Past celebrity attendees included: Michael B. Jordan, Christian Slater, Gavin Rossdale, Gwen Stefani, Ryan Kwanten, Joe Pesci, Justin Chambers, Timothy Olyphant, Boris Kodjoe, Michael Vartan, Lance Bass, Joanna Garcia, Eliza Dushku, Jennifer Morrison, and Kirk Fox.Capping off an epic two days of fundraising and tennis, the celebration will continue into the night with the 10th Anniversary Desert Smash Player Party, which will give supporters and attendees the chance to rub elbows with both Hollywood celebrities and tennis stars while supporting Cancer for College through an exciting live auction all the while enjoying cocktails, a fun selection of food and a live musical performance by Nelly and Boyz II Men.Ferrell notes: “This event is going to be huge. I believe, between the golf and tennis alone, we’re expecting over 12 million people at the Desert Showdown this year. It might be a record for attendance. It’s gonna make Coachella look like a pancake breakfast. Look, I’m not going to sugarcoat it. It’s going to be a lot of work, but there’s nothing easy about cancer. It can devastate a family physically, emotionally and financially. It’s what makes Cancer for College so important. They make a college education a reality for these survivors who have been through so much. Helping these families after all they have been through is the absolute least we can do.”Find out more about the events here.

Trinamool Congress candidate from Bongaon Mamata Bala Thakur offered her prayers at Jaleshwar Temple in Gaighata and also went to a nearby mosque to seek blessings from the head of the mosque. She then walked in and around the Jaleshwar area, seeking votes. Trinamool Congress candidate from Asansol Moon Moon Sen campaigned at Amritnagar in Ranigunj. Chicago Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot’s overwhelming victory was a message by the city’s voters Tuesday that they want an overhaul and makeover of City Hall and that they want to trash the entrenched political machine that has ruled the city for so long. The nation’s third largest city is now the largest American city ever to elect a black woman mayor. Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor, never held elective office until now. She won the election by besting Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle who, herself, served many years on the City Council. More than any candidate in recent times, Lightfoot racked up support in every single section of the city. She won in each of the city’s 50 wards. She had the support of Revolution Now, the progressive group founded by supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders. She will be sworn in on May 20 and on that day joins a group of seven other black women serving as mayors in large U.S. cities including Atlanta and New Orleans. After Jane Byrne, she becomes the second woman to serve as mayor of Chicago. Lightfoot and Preckwinkle, also an African American, say they are working to heal some of the differences between them and some of the divisions in the progressive community which saw unions and other organisations divided in whom they supported. Preckwinkle was perceived by many voters as having too close a connection to the old political machine and Lightfoot was criticised for not being strong enough in her prosecution of police misconduct. The other historical aspect of the elections is that avowed socialists won four additional seats on the City Council by the time polls closed. Many of the socialist aldermen are women of colour. Three aldermanic hopefuls backed by the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America won seats in the runoffs. In the 20th Ward Jeanette Taylor, with 60 per cent of the vote, grabbed the seat held by indicted Willie Cochran. In the 25th Ward, Byron Sigcho-Lopez, with 54 per cent of the vote, took the seat long held by Danny Solis. Solis was the powerful chair of the city’s Zoning Commission. In the 40th Ward, Andre Vasquez defeated the nine-term incumbent Pat O’Connor with 54 per cent of the vote. A fourth Democratic Socialists of America candidate, Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez, was leading by 64 votes with all precincts reporting. The winner will be determined when all the absentee ballots are counted and a recount is conducted. All of the new socialist aldermen will join Carlos-Ramirez-Rosa, a socialist incumbent in the 35th ward and newcomer Daniel LaSpata, another socialist incumbent. Both of them had won in the first-round elections in February. The results mean that in a 50-seat city council at least 10 per cent are members of the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America. “As democratic socialists, we’re ready to build a Chicago for all of us, not just a wealthy few,” said Lucie Macias, one of two Chicago DSA co-chairs. “Our Chicago for All platform is based on three main planks: housing for all, sanctuary for all, and education for all. We’re excited to build a socialist caucus in city hall to carry out this agenda and fight for Chicago’s working class.” The Chicago victories in the aldermanic races reflect a national trend of victories by DSA candidates. The most well-known, of course, was the victory in New York of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. DSA has already endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders for president. Sanders carried the 1st, 25th, 33rd, 35th, and 40th wards in the 2016 Democratic primary in Chicago.(Courtesy: People’s World Views expressed are strictly personal)

Mexico declares renegotiated gas pipeline contracts will save billionsMexico declares renegotiated gas pipeline contracts will save billions
CALGARY — Mexico’s president says his government has reached a deal with private natural gas pipeline operators to solve a dispute over fees and payments. The pipelines would allow Mexico to import U.S. natural gas and distribute gas throughout Mexico. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said the private companies, one of which is believed to be Calgary-based TC Energy Corp., had taken advantage of the country when the contracts were signed under previous administrations.Lopez Obrador said Tuesday that companies from the U.S., Canada and Mexico had agreed to restructure fees. He said the companies accepted about a 30 per cent lower profit margin. The president said the deal would save Mexico — especially the national electricity utility — as much as $4.5 billion over the next three decades. In its recent second-quarter financial report, TC Energy said its Mexican state power utility customer had filed in June for arbitration on contracts for three of its natural gas pipelines, seeking nullification of clauses related to force majeure and reimbursement of fixed capacity payments. It said it had completed construction and commissioning for its Sur de Texas gas import pipeline but had not yet been allowed by the regulator or customer to begin service. Meanwhile, construction was continuing despite delays on its Villa de Reyes project to be completed later this year and its Tula project, where the targeted completion date has been pushed back to the end of 2021.“In our view, the contracts were properly established in accordance with all original bid and regulatory requirements and remain valid and enforceable,” TC reported. “We will defend them as necessary through the arbitration proceedings.” Companies in this story: (TSX:TRP).The Canadian Press

Debate Room Its only fair that Catholic children are prioritised in CatholicDebate Room Its only fair that Catholic children are prioritised in Catholic
Jan 23rd 2017, 7:30 PM Caitriona O’Neill and William Gallagher Short URL Share409 Tweet Email2 Monday 23 Jan 2017, 7:30 PM 144 Comments By Caitriona O’Neill and William Gallagher 2,379 Views http://jrnl.ie/3200769 In a speech at a seminar organised by Equate, a campaign group in this area, Minister Bruton said that he believes that it is unfair that preference is given by publicly-funded religious schools to children of their own religion who might live some distance away, ahead of children of a different religion or of no religion who live close to the school. However, some people claim that faith schools must be permitted to carry out their purpose, and and that is to serve children and parents who share the faith of the school. Is it fair to prioritise Catholic children in Catholic schools when they are publicly-funded? We asked two commentators to debate.YES. The Minister for Education, Richard Bruton, has initiated a consultation on schools’ admissions policies which has ignited a great deal of, not always well informed, debate. There are, therefore, a few points I would like to clarify. Firstly a Baptism Certificate is not needed for admission to a Catholic school. For well over 95% of Catholic primary schools, everyone who applies is admitted. I joked recently that if Damien from The Omen turned up to one of our schools and we had space, we would take him. But it was to make a very serious point. No Catholic primary schools want to refuse any child for any reason.Between 3 and 6% of Catholic primary schools are oversubscribedThere are more applications than places, and in these schools we do prioritise Catholic children. This issue is mainly confined to the greater Dublin area and to the commuter belt (though it can flare up elsewhere). In Dublin our research indicates that 1.2% of applications that did not result in an enrolment in the current school year relate to baptism. We believe there is a growing problem of oversubscription in certain areas in Dublin and would urge Government action to address this as a matter of urgency, through the provision of new schools or the funding of enlargements of existing schools.Right of minority faiths to priorities pupils of their faithIn areas where there is a choice of schools and schools are oversubscribed, we feel it is only fair that Catholic children from that area are given priority access to schools under Catholic patronage. These schools exist to provide Catholic parents with the opportunity for their children to receive an education in line with the parents’ wishes and beliefs. We are also deeply concerned about the right of minority faiths to prioritise pupils of their faith attending their schools. Faith schools are at the heart of many minority faith communities and are absolutely critical to their sustainability. There is a real danger that measures designed to hit a Catholic target end up harming an innocent bystander: small local faith schools. This would be deeply unjust.Seamus Mulconry is General Secretary of the Catholic Primary Schools Management Association. Debate Room: ‘It’s only fair that Catholic children are prioritised in Catholic schools’ Minister for Education, Richard Bruton, plans to legislate on the controversial school admissions system soon. But what about the right of minority faiths to prioritise pupils of their faith? Source: RollingNews.ieNO. I didn’t bow to the whole “baptising your child to get them into school” nonsense and here’s why.First of all, I didn’t get a choice as to what religion, if any, I wanted to be born into. So my children can make up their own minds about these kind of things. Secondly, when I think religion, education doesn’t suddenly spring to mind, but ignorance does. And how I wasted a good chunk of my precious life on bended knee, praying idly, while the church perfected inequality and hypocrisy.Five years ago (when my first child was born) education equality was finally being tackled by Ruairi Quinn, so the idea of a “baptism barrier” still being in place by the time my child started school seemed inconceivable.Same old battle, different gatesYet here we are today. And the church does not want to let go of their grip, as we found out when we went to enroll our child in the local Catholic primary school, a literal stone’s throw from our house.Despite not having a Baptismal Cert the interview started off very “inclusively.” But as the enrolment meeting progressed, it soon became clear that the “baptism barrier” was just one big smokescreen for a wholly bigger issue. Indoctrination.Of course our child was welcome to attend the school, but there were clear conditions which were non-negotiable.Children of other religious faiths and none must sit in the crying room of the church during rehearsals for Communion and Confirmation.Children of other religious faiths and none must do so unsupervised as their teacher will be at the altar preparing the other religious kids.Children of other religious faiths can “opt” out of religion class, albeit sit in the same classroom where religious instruction is taking place. I said to the principal that I can’t accept my child receiving mixed messages about virgins and birth which contradicts biology and evidence-based facts of life.During religion class children of other religious faiths and none can do their homework, or are encouraged to get more “involved” by helping with the preparation for Communion, by colouring in some “Jesus Loves You” banner.I offered (as a registered member of the Irish Teacher’s Council) to supervise my child and other children during religion class, as that would solve the school’s lack of teaching resources for class separation. I was flatly rejected. Why the “baptism barrier” won’t washMinister Bruton, what you mean when you state: “Within this approach, there is capacity to allow religious schools to require parents or students to indicate some support or respect for the ethos of the school” is what is translated to the above experience. This is my own lived and discriminating experience of trying to access equal education for my child in a publicly-funded school that promotes exclusion, segregation, ignorance, noncooperation and apathy.Grace Vaughan is a wholly irreverent mother and writer who lives in Co Meath with current husband.Catholic group says 95% of their schools don’t have a baptism barrier>“It’s not something that should be up for vote” – can the problem with religion in Irish schools be solved?>What do you think? Is it fair that Catholic children are prioritised in publicly-funded Catholic schools? Let us know what you think in the comments below. Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article

declaration of roads leading to the hill shrine as high security zones was aimed at paving the way for women from the banned age group to enter the temple during the pilgrim season beginning from 17 November “The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the review petitions and the writ petitions against the five-judge constitution bench on 13 November Instead of waiting to know the outcome of the hearing the government is trying to bulldoze its way at Sabarimala” said state BJP president PS Sreedharan Pillai He said that the desperate attempt being made by the government to take young women to the hill shrine is part of its attempt to implement the ruling front’s agenda of destroying the temple Amit Shah has given the protests a political spin by accusing the LDF government of meddling with the faith of Hindus and destroying their places of worship "Since 26 October around 2000 workers of the BJP RSS and other Hindu organisations have been thrown into jails This is an attempt to suppress the devotees If the government goes ahead with the move the BJP will stand by the devotees not just in Kerala but across the country and even pull down government” he added The chief minister has taken the warning seriously Terming the BJP chief’s statement as a call to topple the democratically elected government he has urged the democratic forces to come out against it He has termed Shah’s statement as an indictment of the country’s highest court “The BJP president is giving a call to dislodge the government for implementing the court order and protecting the constitutionally guaranteed rights of the people The democratically minded people will rise against this threat and give a befitting reply to the BJP” Vijayan said while reacting to Amit Shah’s statement Jacob George a political analyst based at Thiruvananthapuram said that the standoff at Sabarimala has made it a political hotspot “Every party sees potential in the Supreme Court verdict to reap political capital The parties fighting for the devotees have nothing to do with faith Their eyes are on the votes” he said “While the BJP is trying to use the issue to polarise the Hindus the LDF is targeting the minority votes The Congress on the other hand is trying to protect its base among the upper caste Hindus by expressing solidarity with the devotees and taking its pro-Hindu stand to them through public campaigns” he added He said that the LDF is optimistic that whatever gains the BJP may make over Sabarimala may not affect its poll prospects as the former’s support base among Hindus are the committed cadres belonging to the lower castes These members of the cadre have stood by the LDF even after an organisation from the community floated a political party and joined hands with the BJP “This may be the reason why the chief minister has tried to create a wedge between the lower castes and upper castes over the Sabarimala verdict This is aimed at consolidating his party’s base among the lower castes and making additional gains from the minorities and progressive sections Curiously some of the organisations representing the lower castes like the SNDP have been supporting the government” Jacob said He feels that the offensive line adopted by the BJP and the LDF with respect to the Supreme Court verdict may turn Sabarimala into a site of conflict Rome: Roma sporting director Monchi claimed that VAR "must" be brought into the Champions League after "incredible" errors by the officials during his side’s semi-final loss to Liverpool Roma sporting director Monchi claimed that VAR must be brought into the Champions League AFP Eusebio Di Francesco’s Italian outfit threatened a repeat of their quarter-final comeback against Barcelona but fell to a 7-6 aggregate defeat despite a 4-2 second-leg win at the Stadio Olimpico Although Roma were awarded a penalty in each game of the last-four tie Monchi insisted his team would have reached the final if VAR had been used "Congratulations to Liverpool but it is necessary to analyse what happened" he told Italian television "There were two very clear penalties that were missed tonight and that changed everything and in the first leg they scored an offside goal "The VAR must come into the Champions League I don’t understand why there is no VAR in the most important competition" UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has said that video technology will not be introduced for next season’s European competitions although FIFA will use it for this year’s World Cup in Russia Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon launched into a remarkable tirade against the officials after his side were knocked out by an injury-time Cristiano Ronaldo penalty in the quarter-finals against Real Madrid and Monchi thinks that Juve were also unfairly treated "This is the moment for Italian football to raise its voice" he added "Juventus were also eliminated because of incredible mistakes There were also (incredible mistakes) yesterday in Real against Bayern Munich" Losing weight is hard which is why weight loss experts have long searched for different approaches to make it easier for people One strategy gaining steam is intermittent fasting where people fast or lower their calories substantially for a short period of time (This diet plan also has potential lifespan-extending benefits) But new research published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that the fasting diet may not be the weight loss key it’s been hyped up to be In the new trial researchers wanted to know whether people who tried a fasting diet would be more successful than those on a standard diet They told 100 people with obesity to follow one of three diets for a year Some were told to cut their calorie consumption by 25% per daya typical calorie restriction dietwhile others did an alternate-day fasting diet where they ate about 500 calories on "fast" days and whatever they wanted on "feast” days The last group which served as the control group ate what they normally would MORE: You Asked: What’s the Best Way to Lose Weight The researchers expected that the people in the fasting group would lose more weight and have an easier time sticking to the diet than regular dieters but the results didn’t reflect that At the end of the year people who did the fasting diet and those who just cut calories both lost an average of 13 pounds However people in the fasting group actually had a harder time sticking to the diet and more people in that group dropped out of the study MORE: 100 Super Healthy and Filling Foods "I really thought people would have an easier time and lose more weight on the [fasting diet] and I was shocked they lost the same amount" says study author Krista Varady an associate professor of nutrition the University of Illinois at Chicago and author of the book The Every-Other-Day Diet "The take-home message for me is that this diet isnt for everyone" TIME Health Newsletter Get the latest health and science news plus: burning questions and expert tips View Sample Sign Up Now The researchers also did not find significant differences in other health measures between the dieting groups like blood pressure heart rate or insulin resistance Varady says that while half of the people in the fasting group “could barely do the diet” there were several people who were very successful losing between 20 to 50 pounds Those findings suggest that some people do respond well to the diet Still what works for one person clearly doesnt work for everyone "If people have failed other diets maybe this will work" Varady says "People will pick what diet works best for them” Contact us at editors@timecomTaylor Swift could appear in federal court in Denver Monday as jury selection begins in a case against a
