Moroccan Journalist Meryem Bouzaachane Gives Voice to Those With No VoiceMoroccan Journalist Meryem Bouzaachane Gives Voice to Those With No Voice
Meknes – Meryem Bouzaachane, a 24-year-old Moroccan journalist at Al Akhbar newspaper, has won the youth journalist award in Dubai as part of the 14th annual Arab Media Forum. In an exclusive interview with Morocco World News, youth journalist award winner Meryem Bouzaachane described her life journey and the troubles and triumphs she experienced along the way.Bouzaachane prides herself on using journalism to defend people who have no way to express themselves. After obtaining her baccalaureate degree with distinction, Bouzaachane became one of the founding members of Rachid Nini’s Al Akhbar newspaper. “Journalism was a dream for me; since my childhood I wished to be a journalist neither for fame nor for money, but to be a spoken pen defending the rights of the indigent and speechless people. I desired many times to be their voice and transmit their messages,” Bouzaachane told Morocco World News. “I always receive people at the office of the newspaper and take their statements and their complaints and turn them into articles in order to crack their problems,” she continued.Bouzaachane went on to describe how her journey was an unexpected one. “Once, I failed the enrollment test for the Higher Institute of Media and Communications (ISIC). I was going to study engineering, but in the summer I was truly impressed by a series narrating a tale of a journalist in the Iraq war. And I said ‘I should be like that journalist,’ and I no longer wanted to be an engineer.”Bouzaachane continued, “I made many efforts to persuade my father in order to go to Casablanca and study in a private institute of journalism there. Ultimately, thanks to God, my childhood dream came true,” Bouzaachane said.Bouzaachane encountered many obstacles. First, she faced the difficulty of finding information for articles and the bureaucracy that all journalists face. Additionally, some ministers decline to make statements and interviews for fear of political backlash. Moreover, she also faced safety issues common to her field, with the possibility of being sent to prison for an article that reveals too much always looming over her head and limiting her ability to publish the truth.Currently, Bouzaachane hopes to keep on the investigative path her life has taken her down. She hopes to enhance her journalistic potential through the training she’s received at home and abroad and benefit from her diverse educational background. “I always dreamed of obtaining awards in order to show the value of journalism in Morocco and show people that their voice is heard,” Bouzaachane concluded.© Morocco World News. Duterte drug war an example to the whole world says SirisenaDuterte drug war an example to the whole world says Sirisena
After his government vowed last year to “replicate the success” of the Philippines’ drug war, Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena again heaped praises on President Rodrigo Duterte’s top crusade, saying it is an example to the whole world, ABS-CBN News reported. In his toast during a state banquet in Malacañang, Sirisena said Duterte’s drug war is also a personal example to him. Official police data put the death toll from drug operations at a little over 5,000, but human rights groups say this figure is significantly lower than the actual number of killings.Sirisena is in the country for a five-day state visit that will also see him visit the Asian Development Bank in Mandaluyong, and the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños. (Colombo Gazette) “Excellency, the war against crime and drugs carried out by you is an example to the whole world, and personally to me. Drug menace is rampant in my country and I feel that we should follow your footsteps to control this hazard,” he said. While lauded by Duterte’s supporters, the war on drugs has drawn global condemnation for the mounting deaths linked to it.
Increased minimum wage a win for workers Brock labour studies profIncreased minimum wage a win for workers Brock labour studies prof
Tuesday’s announcement to raise the minimum wage in Ontario should be considered a victory for the labour movement, says a Brock University professor.Simon Black, Assistant Professor in Brock’s Centre for Labour Studies, calls the announcement by Premier Kathleen Wynne to raise minimum wage to $15 by 2019 a “huge victory.”“Right now, the minimum wage is poverty wage,” Black says. “We can’t have people working upwards of 40 hours a week and then at the end of the year they’re still below that poverty line cutoff.”Under the announced plan, the legal minimum hourly wage will increase from the current $11.40 to $11.60 in October, then to $14 on Jan. 1, 2018, and to $15 one year later. The plan also includes additional benefits such as increased vacation time and equal pay for part-time workers doing the same job as full-time staff. That $15 per hour threshold was something the labour movement has been fighting hard for, says Black, who was part of the international “$15 and Fairness” campaign.“I think (the increases) are great, but they shouldn’t be seen as a gift bestowed upon low-wage workers by the Liberal government. This is the product of a social movement, a product of organizing and mobilizing. This didn’t just materialize out of thin air,” Black says.To criticism that the increased wages will hurt small businesses, Black says it will all balance out.“This will give minimum-wage workers more money in their pockets to buy the things they need, which will contribute to growing the economy.”

Redshirt junior linebacker Etienne Sabino had an interesting road to a starting job for the Ohio State defense. After Sabino lost the job to current senior Andrew Sweat last spring, he and the coaches decided a redshirt might be in the his best interest. The decision was difficult for Sabino to cope with. “I would say it was probably one of the hardest years of my life,” Sabino said. “The toughest part was sitting on the sideline on Saturday and not being able to play.” Injuries to OSU’s defense and special teams units almost forced Sabino to give up his redshirt and play, but the team held out, giving him more time to grow. Despite his yearlong hiatus being difficult, Sabino said it helped him develop as a player. “I think I really got a better grasp of the defense as a whole,” he said. “As far as with me redshirting last year, I really think that helped me in that sense.” With another year in the system, Sabino is projected to be a starter at middle linebacker this season, replacing last year’s leading tackler, Brian Rolle, who recorded 76 tackles. Sabino said learning the defensive schemes has helped him progress as a linebacker. “It actually slows the game down for you when you’re out there and not thinking, and you can just react and know what you have,” he said. “It just helps your game and your overall football knowledge.” As a junior, Sabino is expected to take on a leadership role for the Buckeye defense, and junior defensive back Orhian Johnson said he thinks Sabino has blossomed into someone the defense can rely on. “He’s definitely stepped up into that leadership role,” Johnson said. “He’s been showing his dedication a lot, and I just really feel like he’s ready to let it all go and go out and perform.” Junior defensive lineman John Simon said Sabino’s presence on the defense makes the group better. “He’s a physical player and he gets the whole defense riled up,” Simon said. “We love having him out there when he’s making plays for us.” Spring practice has proven Sabino is ready to contribute to the defense, Simon said. “Right now is probably the best I’ve felt,” Sabino said, “and I feel very comfortable out there.” Johnson said he thinks Sabino has always had the talent but that he has become even better this spring. “We saw bright spots for him in his future,” Johnson said, “but he’s definitely stepped up a lot.” Even with the progress he has made in the system and the talent he has, Sabino said there is room to improve. “I’m really just trying to work on my little techniques and really just trying to get better in that sense,” he said. “I’m just focused on every day — I’m trying to get better every day.” With a young defense and the departure of starting linebackers Rolle and Ross Homan, Sabino said he is working to be a force on this year’s version of the Silver Bullets. “I’m just trying to be a playmaker,” he said, “and just help this team win in any way that I can.”

The latest issue of International Mining Project News, out today, has reports on 21 Prefeasibility Studies, 18 Feasibility studies, 25 projects in development, three new mines that have gone into production, six existing mines that are expanding, three merger and acquisition announcements and many new appointments to new positions. The report covers 37 gold projects, 16 copper, 12 silver, seven iron ore and zinc projects, five coal, four on potash and uranium, three lead projects, two projects on tungsten, nickel, molybdenum, rare earth elements and lithium, and one project each on heavy mineral sands, anorthosite, platinum group metals, manganese, vanadium and titanium. This fortnightly project watch is a great way of keeping up to date with your peers – other mining companies, other consultants or other engineering companies. These issues build into a global mine project overview. If you are a supplier – it is full of potential sales leads. The official opening ceremony of the Perkoa zinc project in Burkina Faso was held on-site on the 19 January 2013 with over 1,000 people attending including representatives of Glencore and Blackthorn Resources as well as senior government officials and Prime Minister Tiao. The commissioning of the process plant is on-going with test batches of concentrate continuing to be produced. Glencore has previously agreed to provide development capital of $120 million to fund the expanded project construction and commissioning via a combination of project equity and project loans. In addition, Glencore agreed to provide or source a working capital facility to a maximum of $20 million, for a total financing package of $140 million. Commissioning is now expected to be complete by the end of February 2013. This revised estimate brings the total cost of the project to the end of commissioning (including Blackthorn Resources’ initial $80 million capital spend) to approximately $260 million.Oromin Explorations, on behalf of Oromin Joint Venture Group (OJVG), has announced the positive results of its 2013 Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) feasibility study (FS) and Mineral Reserve update for its OJVG gold project in Senegal, West Africa. The FS was compiled by SRK Consulting (Canada). Highlights include an average gold production for first three years of full production at 182,000 payable oz/y; average LOM gold production of 144,000 oz/y; both open pit and underground gold mining with a current mine life of 17 years; and a probable mineral reserves increase of 64% to 2.335 Mo of contained gold since the 2010 FS – the OJVG gold project now hosts the largest gold reserve in Senegal.Marengo Mining has received pricing for a fixed lump sum, turnkey, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for development of its Yandera copper-molybdenum-gold project in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea from major Chinese engineering, construction and mining company, China Nonferrous Metal Industry’s Foreign Engineering and Construction (NFC). The EPC pricing provides a strong foundation for the completion and delivery of the Yandera feasibility study, which is scheduled for completion in March 2013. As previously advised, NFC has prepared its EPC pricing by working in parallel with the Feasibility Study team as part of the overall development strategy at Yandera. Other infrastructure, including mining fleet, pre-strip and power transmission line, subject to the completion of the pending feasibility study, is currently estimated in the range of $300-400 million for a total project capex in the range of $1.7-$1.85 billion.Ivanplats has announced that an intensive drilling program during 2011 and 2012 at the company’s Flatreef Discovery in the Northern Limb of the Bushveld Complex in South Africa has dramatically expanded and upgraded the Flatreef precious- and base-metal mineral resources. Speaking in a keynote address at the Investing in African Mining Indaba Conference, Robert Friedland, Executive Chairman, said that a new mineral resource model based on drilling results audited by AMEC E&C Services of Reno, Nevada, has upgraded more than 220 Mt of the Flatreef Discovery’s previously declared Inferred mineral resources into the higher-confidence classification of Indicated mineral resources.Flatreef’s Indicated mineral resources now total 223 Mt grading 4.1 g/t 4PE (platinum, palladium, gold and rhodium), 0.34% Ni and 0.16% Cu, at a 2.0 g/t 4PE cut-off grade and at a cumulative, average true thickness of 24.3 m. The Indicated resources contain an estimated 29.2 Moz of platinum, palladium, gold and rhodium, 1,700 Mlb of nickel and 800 Mlb of copper.Northcliff Resources has completed a positive feasibility study for its 100%-owned Sisson project located in New Brunswick, Canada, confirming the long-life open pit tungsten and molybdenum development as a technically and economically robust project. The study was undertaken by Samuel Engineering of Denver, Colorado. President & CEO Chris Zahovskis: “In just two years, Northcliff has advanced Sisson from an exploration and early-stage development project to achieve this important project milestone. We have significantly de-risked the project and now have one of the largest tungsten reserves outside China. We are confident that Sisson is on track to earn the necessary environmental and construction permits from federal and provincial regulators in 2014, and Northcliff will be pursuing partnerships with global companies interested in the Sisson project or tungsten off-take agreements, positioning Northcliff to achieve the financing necessary to initiate project construction in 2014 and commissioning by 2016.”There’s much more information in the report, which runs to nearly 40 pages.

School letter Kids can skip lunch line if parents pay extra moneySchool letter Kids can skip lunch line if parents pay extra money
SARASOTA, Fla. (WSVN) — A school letter went home to parents of children at one Florida school, saying their kids could move to the front of the lunch line in the cafeteria if they sent in extra money.Lawton Chiles Middle Academy’s Principal Brian Andrews said he was not aware of the letter, and that he strives to include every child.“This definitely hits home for me and I am very upset about it,” Andrews said. One student’s father was the first to speak out about the letter, where the PTSA was raising money by having parents pay $100 for a pass for their students to go to the front of the lunch line.“Let me read this again. This can’t be right,” Chris Stevenson recalled. “They can’t have thought, ‘This is a great idea.’”Stevenson said the letter sent the wrong message to students.“If we’re putting kids in the front because Dad has money, this dad over here doesn’t. Why didn’t that click? It’s 2017. It’s not the 1960s,” he told Fox 13. “We’re not telling people to go to the back of the bus because you’re poor. It’s stupid. It’s beyond where we should be at this point.” After he took to Facebook, he found there were several other offended parents. The Parent-Teacher-Student Association is taking the blame.“This family and business sponsorship program was explored, but we decided not to implement,” the president of the PTSA explained to Fox 13. “Due to a clerical error, the form was inadvertently included in the orientation packets.”The school superintendent was also quick to shoot down the idea after the issue was brought to her attention.“It’s not the way we operate,” Dr. Jacqueline Byrd insisted. “This story is not happening.”Copyright 2019 Sunbeam Television Corp. A signboard is seen from the Indian side of the Indo-China border at Bumla, Arunachal Pradesh.Reuters fileA group of Chinese soldiers wearing civilian clothes drove inside Koyul village in Demchok sector near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) where they wanted to stop the Tibetan refugees from celebrating Dalai Lama’s birthday on July 6. The Chinese officials reportedly drove SUVs in Ladakh division of Jammu and Kashmir where some Tibetans were hoisting Tibetan flags. The Chinese officials wanted to stop the refugees from hoisting the Tibet flags and stop the celebrations, according to reports. Official sources told the News18 that since LAC is not properly demarcated, it has led to a differing understanding of Chinese and Ladakh territories. The Chinese authorities reportedly lodged a strong protest against the celebration of Tibet Day which they perceive as a ploy to divide the territory. The Indian Army personnel stationed at the spot did not let the Chinese proceed further and assured them that the matter would be resolved amicably. By then, the Chinese had entered 1.3 kilometres into the Indian territory. Some officials, however, claimed that the Chinese had entered 5 kilometres into the Indian territory and were sent back by the Indian Army. However, another version of the incident, which has come to light, stated that the Chinese didn’t cross the LAC but held the protest inside their territory showing banners that protested against Tibet Day celebrations. The banners, according to officials, called for banning all the activities which were designed to split the Tibet. They then showed them banners and waited there for 30-40 minutes but did not cross the Line of Actual Control,” the sources told the PTI.Since the 2017 Doklam standoff between India and China, when the armies on both sides were engaged in skirmishes for 73 days, there have been multiple reports of Chinese incursions along the disputed LAC which the Indian Army has been able to stop.
Supreme Court Upholds Texas 1 Person 1 Vote Standard For Electoral DistrictsSupreme Court Upholds Texas 1 Person 1 Vote Standard For Electoral Districts
Listen X To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: 00:00 /02:27 Share The United States Supreme Court on Monday unanimously upheld a Texas law that counts everyone – not just eligible voters – in deciding how to draw electoral districts.Federal law requires states to draw political districts of roughly equal population – according to the principle of “one person, one vote.” Texas drew its latest state senate districting map using the same standard as every other state in the union. The challengers said that approach created districts with vastly different population counts. They argued it discriminates against eligible voters, in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Supreme Court disagreed.Peter Linzer teaches constitutional law at the University of Houston Law Center. He says it would have been easy for the high court to just uphold the lower court ruling in Texas’ favor.“Instead,” Linzer says, “we get a 20-page opinion from Justice [Ruth Bader] Ginsburg, plus concurrences by Justices [Clarence] Thomas and [Samuel] Alito, arguing on the question of, ‘These people who aren’t registered, do they have a right to be thought about by their representatives, be represented by the people who they couldn’t vote for?’ And the opinion strongly says yes.”The ruling is likely to bolster the voting power of Texas’ booming Latino population over sparsely populated rural areas dominated by conservatives.“This is a monumental case for Latinos in this state and for all Texans,” says State Senator Sylvia Garcia, who represents Senate District 6, covering Houston and Harris County. “The Supreme Court is sending a very strong signal that everybody deserves representation in Congress and in all levels of government.”But the high court’s ruling did not preclude states from changing their laws to redefine “one person, one vote” as being limited to eligible voters. The Project on Fair Representation is a conservative advocacy group that helped bring the suit against Texas. Edward Blum is the group’s director.“As the nation approaches another round of redistricting in 2020, our group, and I believe other groups, will encourage jurisdictions throughout the country to use some metric of citizen population, not total population,” Blum says.Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office issued a statement saying only that his office was pleased with the decision and “committed to defending the Constitution.”The Ruling
Share in Daily Dose, Data, News May 1, 2017 646 Views Seller Confidence Gets a Boost For Redfin, the top answer on its latest Home-Seller Sentiment Survey was a pleasant irony. When asked to list their top three concerns about selling their homes, a quarter of the sellers who responded said they had none. This was a marked jump in seller confidence, if measured against the last time Redfin surveyed sellers in January. April’s numbers reflect a nine-point jump in unconcerned sellers, and “no concerns” leapt from the eighth-most common answer to the top of the list three months later. There was also a drop in the percentage of sellers worried about finding a replacement home, down from 24 percent in January to 18 percent in April.Redfin credited a strong selling season in March for the boost in confidence. One measure of increased confidence was that sellers adopted a more aggressive pricing strategy. The share of sellers reporting they would price high because they believe negotiation in inevitable increased almost 6 percent, to 21 percent in April. At the same time, the firm’s chief economist, Nela Richardson, said prospective sellers have been slow to list their homes.“New listings dropped 2.3 percent in the first three months of the year compared to the same period last year,” Richardson said. “Would-be sellers are likely waiting for prices to peak; they’re trying to time the market to fetch the largest possible gain.”Whether this is a good thing is open to debate. Sylva Khayalian, a Redfin agent in Los Angeles, said, “Over-pricing one’s home is a common mistake made in a seller’s market. Especially as we progress through the spring and into the summer months, homeowners see neighbors receive multiple offers and sell for more than their asking price and some assume they can ask for even more.Another measure of seller confidence is that a fifth of sellers told Redfin they had all the power in a sale right now. That’s up 7 percent from January. Meanwhile, 22.5 percent of sellers said buyers have zero power. That’s up 9 percent from January.Lest that come across the wrong way, the bulk of respondents put things a little more modestly. Almost 36 percent of sellers said they had a little more power in a negotiation and sale than buyers. And that number was actual down since January. Then, more than 40 percent of sellers had the same thing. But whether that number dropped because more sellers think buyers have greater leverage or because they shifted their views from “some” to “all” in terms of the power sellers hold is unclear. Blueberry volume was up +25.2%, with pricing down -7.5%, while raspberry volume growth was +19.1% and pricing down -6.3%.Costa also said that it had established a dedicated varietal improvement facility at Atherton (FNQ) with the aim of developing varieties specifically suited to low latitude environments, both in Australia and overseas, especially China and Mexico. The citrus category, which Costa said achieved a “standout result” for the financial year, benefitted from a late start to the 2017 season and early start to the 2018 season coupled with excellent crop quality and strong export market demand for navel oranges and seedless mandarins. The 2018 calendar season is forecasted to produce circa 80,000 metric tons (MT), a 20% reduction on the prior season, reflecting the normal biennial bearing cycle of citrus crops. The company said that with 75% of its citrus exporting to countries including Japan, the U.S. and China, the reduction of Korean citrus trade tariffs has opened up an exciting new export market, highlighted by the fact that consumer preferences are similar to those of Japan, but with greater per capita demand.International berry growthThe company noted its China expansion program is progressing well, with a total of 100 hectares planted at the end of the financial year. These plantings are across three farms, with 77 hectares of blueberries, 16 hectares of raspberries and 7 hectares of blackberries.”A further 65 hectares consisting predominantly of blueberries is to be planted in 2019, with significant development and preparation work completed ahead of the current wet season. Land options for 2020 plantings are also currently being explored,” it said.Morocco blueberry plantings totaled 294 hectares at the end of the period across six farms, including 21 hectares in Agadir (720km south of its existing farms) for season extension. The 2018-19 program will focus on further plantings in Agadir.OutlookCosta said that during 2019 “significant scale” will be delivered in mushrooms and avocados, and together with growth in tomatoes and berries they are expected to provide long-term sustainable returns.Based on the current trading conditions, the company expects to generate low double-digit profit growth in the year ahead to June 30, 2019.
