In celebration of Adopt a Cat Month, beloved animated cat and international icon Garfield has joined The Shelter Pet Project in several new videos and sharable graphics to show the love and joy that shelter pets bring to their owners’ lives.Garfield Joins Shelter Pet ProjectIn the new public service ads (PSAs), characters Garfield and Odie encourage audiences to visit TheShelterPetProject.org to meet cats and dogs available for adoption at local shelters and rescue groups.Garfield and Odie have been beloved fixtures in popular culture since 1978, when the cartoon debuted in 41 newspapers. Today, the famous fat cat is featured in 2,100 newspapers and is the star of the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip. Garfield and Odie have gone on to also star in books, on TV, and even in musicals over the years.“Who better to champion the need to visit a shelter than Garfield?” said Garfield creator and CEO of Paws, Inc. Jim Davis. “Everyone here at Paws, Inc. is so honored to be a part of this initiative. I hope that Garfield can encourage a whole new generation to visit their local animal shelter or rescue group. Who knows, there might be a Garfield or an Odie waiting for them.”June marks a particularly active time for shelters and rescue groups, as it’s the peak of kitten season, when thousands of newborn homeless kittens join other cats available for adoption across the United States. There are cats for every personality in shelters and rescue groups right now, and with each adoption, the number of healthy and treatable pets who lose their lives in shelters each year declines. Currently, about 2.4 million pets still need to find a home each year. The Shelter Pet Project’s goal is to bring that number down to zero.“Every shelter pet deserves a loving family, and every loving family deserves an amazing shelter pet,” said Michael Markarian, Chief Program and Policy Officer for The HSUS. “We are thrilled to have the support of Garfield and Odie in urging families to make shelters and rescue groups their first stop when bringing a beloved new four-legged friend into their home.”The videos feature Garfield talking directly to the screen encouraging viewers to go online and see what shelter pets are available in their area. In addition to the videos, the Paws, Inc. team has created a series of animated social graphics depicting Garfield and Odie asking viewers to visit the Shelter Pet Project website. At TheShelterPetProject.org, prospective adopters can browse through a database of dogs and cats available for adoption in their area and learn more about misconceptions around shelter pet adoption as well as about the process of adopting a pet.“If just a small percentage of those looking to acquire a pet in the next year choose to adopt, we can end the euthanization of all healthy and treatable pets across the U.S,” said Rich Avanzino, President of Maddie’s Fund. “Thanks to Garfield, millions of people can see the joy – and laughs – that come with sharing their lives with pets. We couldn’t ask for a better friend to support our campaign.”“The Shelter Pet Project is one of our most beloved campaigns and it has helped countless pets find loving homes and families. This partnership with Paws, Inc. and Garfield will only enhance our message,” said Ad Council President and CEO Lisa Sherman. “Garfield has been an iconic and treasured figure for generations of children and families and he will be such an influential advocate for shelter pets across the country. We are hopeful that he will be able to reach and inspire new audiences.”

“These terrorists hit Algeria, but they also hit the UN in the heart. It was the entire staff of the Organization who was touched, who felt this pain,” said the Secretary-General, in a message in French. “Unfortunately, these attacks are only increasing and we are now targeted around the world, while we are here to support the most vulnerable populations,” he highlighted.Seventeen staff members from several UN humanitarian and development agencies were killed on 11 December 2007 when a car bomb ripped through the offices. A number of Algerians were also killed and over one hundred injured. “We will not forget them. We will not forget the pain of those who remain, who must survive after such trauma and continue their lives, broken homes and interrupted dreams,” he added in his message, expressing his deepest sympathies and support. Also in the message the Secretary-General expressed his full solidarity with the people and the Government of Algeria in their efforts to fight against terrorism and violent extremism. “The United Nations will always be at your side,” he said.
No One Can Agree On What a Normal Voice Sounds LikeNo One Can Agree On What a Normal Voice Sounds Like
Study: Be Careful How You Use the Word ‘The’Voynich manuscript: Nonsensical fraud, forgotten language, or secret code? A new study from the University of California, Los Angeles has debunked the idea of a “normal voice.”During this week’s Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), researcher Jody Kreiman presented her findings on voice perception and what it means for a voice to sound “normal.”“How you sound affects every aspect of your existence as a biological being,” she said in a statement published by the ASA. “Voice quality is your auditory face.”So a perceived abnormality—continued use of a high-pitched voice after puberty, breaks or interruptions in sentences, a foreign accent, hoarseness—can lead to negative judgments or even ridicule. But just because you don’t have the soothing timbre or Morgan Freeman or the raspy sexiness of Scarlett Johansson doesn’t mean you’re vocally handicapped.“When we started looking at the literature, everyone dodges the question of normalness,” Kreiman explained. “Clearly, a great deal depends on what we call ‘normal’ and not ‘normal.’”To determine those definitions, she asked volunteers to listen to voice recordings and order them based on perceived severity of vocal pathology. Each consisted of a one-second sustained vowel sound, produced by 100 female speakers. Half of the vocalizations came from clinical recordings of women with diagnosed voice abnormalities; the other half from UCLA students with no known vocal disorder.“We are not interested in cases where people have a very large abnormality,” Kreiman said. “We are more interested in borderline cases so we can begin defining a boundary between ‘normal’ and not ‘normal.’”One which does not, it seems, actually exist.Initial findings suggest that while listeners sometimes agreed on which voices sounded abnormal, they were not in assent over those that seemed “normal.”“What these results are really saying is that the current view that voice perception is just the voice signal, or the person speaking, or the person listening, is wrong,” Kreiman said. “We are dealing with a dynamic interaction between the speaker, the signal, the context, and the listener, and we have to understand how all these different parts go together to really understand voice.”Moving forward, Kreiman & Co. are studying a collection of male speakers to broaden the scope of the ongoing experiment. Journalist and Gandhi Ashram Trust Swadesh Roy also spoke. The Indian envoy appreciated the leadership of Gandhi for his peaceful and non-violencc approach in the freedom struggle of India. As part of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi, artistes from over 124 countries have contributed musically to paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi through his favourite bhajan ‘Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye, according to Indian Ministry of External Affairs. On Gandhi Jayanti, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi launched a medley version of the famous bhajan by artistes from over 40 countries, during the closing ceremony of the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Conference in the presence of the secretary general of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, minister of drinking water and sanitation Uma Bharti and other prominent personalities. The famous Gujarati hymn was penned by the 15th century poet Narsimha Mehta and was one of the favourite bhajans of Mahatma Gandhi who included it into the roster of prayers routinely sung before his meetings. All Indian Missions abroad identified a local artiste or group to record the bhajan in the run-up to Gandhi Jayanti. On Monday, industries minister Amir Hossain Amu highlighted Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of peace and non-violence as well as his immense contributions saying his role would ever remain as the source of inspiration for all.”Mahatma Gandhi was a symbol of humanity,” said the minister while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar in the city.Amu said Mahatma Gandhi’s name comes first if anybody talks about world peace. “He remained uncompromising in terms of non-violence ideologies and truth.”Veteran writer Abul Maksud addressed the programme as a special guest. Profile of former Thailand prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Photo: AFPThailand’s top court will deliver a verdict Wednesday on whether former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra is guilty of negligence-but the fugitive politician will almost certainly be a no-show, having yet to publicly emerge since she fled the kingdom last month.Yingluck, whose elected government was toppled in a 2014 coup, faces up to a decade in jail for negligence over a rice policy. The Supreme Court ruling was supposed to be read on August 25, but the 50-year-old threw the court a curveball when she failed to show up, stunning thousands of supporters who had gathered outside.Yingluck has not made any public appearance or comments since her vanishing act, but there are widespread reports she has joined her billionaire brother Thaksin, a former prime minister also ousted in a 2006 coup, in Dubai. On Wednesday, as her lawyers arrived at the Bangkok court, several hundred supporters gathered outside chanted “we love” Yingluck, followed by “Dubai!”On the eve of the verdict junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha declared his “spies” had informed him of Yingluck’s whereabouts, but said he would not reveal her location until after the judgement was delivered.Yingluck’s lawyer Norawit Lalaeng, meanwhile, told AFP he had not spoken to his client since her disappearance.“She hasn’t contacted me at all since last month,” he said.Tight security netThailand’s junta leaders-arch enemies of the Shinawatra siblings-deny having any prior knowledge of Yingluck’s plan to escape. But many are unconvinced given the junta’s tight security net and round-the-clock surveillance of the former leader.Analysts say Yingluck likely cut a deal with the military leaders, who are bent on scrubbing her powerful clan from Thailand’s political scene.“By getting Yingluck out of Thailand, the military gets rid of a potential thorn in their side who could become a martyr if jailed, or a powerful politician again if she is not,” said Paul Chambers, an expert on Thai politics.Yingluck’s trial revolves around accusations that she failed to stop corruption in a rice subsidy scheme that pumped cash into her family’s rural base in the northeast. The policy was wildly popular among farmers but slammed as a costly populist handout by her critics in the royalist, army-backed elite. Those divisions-between Shinawatra supporters among the urban and rural poor and rivals in the traditional aristocracy-have gnawed at Thailand for over a decade. While the Shinawatra clan has dominated electoral politics, their governments have been repeatedly knocked down by coups and court rulings backed by elites, triggering rounds of rival protests.Political unrest has been hemmed in under the junta, which has banned protests and smothered dissent. With both Yingluck and Thaksin now in exile, there are major questions about the future of their political dynasty and the pro-democracy “Redshirt” movement formed by their supporters.Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a politics expert at Chulalongkorn University, said a heavy sentencing Wednesday would jack up Thailand’s political temperature but is unlikely to trigger any “cataclysmic” forms of unrest. If the ruling is “harsh and seen as unjust, it will exacerbate and build up frustrations on one side of Thailand’s polarised society,” he told AFP.
Wildfire creeps through the forest, down the south side of Dry Creek Canyon, at the Partrick Fire on 12 October 2017 west of Napa, California. Thousands of homes have burned, at least 31 people confirmed killed with hundreds still missing as California wildfires continue to spread out of control. The death toll from California’s raging wildfires rose to 38 on Saturday, with more than 10,000 firefighters battling 16 large blazes and 100,000 people evacuated, the state’s fire service said.Around 335 square miles (864 square kilometers) of residential neighborhoods, forests and other property have been burned since Sunday, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).”These fires have been extremely destructive, with 5,700 structures estimated to have been destroyed,” the service said in a statement.Cal Fire later announced on its Twitter account that the death toll had risen from 35 in the morning to 38, with 20 of the fatalities occurring in Sonoma County alone, where more than 200 people are still missing.Pre-dawn winds in Santa Rosa have complicated the effort, pushing a blaze known as the Nuns Fire in two separate directions and forcing thousands to evacuate their homes near Oakmont and northeast of the city of Sonoma, Cal Fire said.Numerous churches across the region — in Santa Rosa, Napa, Sonoma, Petaluma and Novato — were housing victims of the wildfires and serving as resting places for firefighters, according to the Sacramento Bee newspaper.California Governor Jerry Brown announced the White House had approved a request for direct aid for families in four counties, adding to emergency funds promised to the devastated winemaking areas of Napa and Sonoma.- ‘The horror’ -Brown and Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris met community leaders and emergency management officials in Santa Rosa later Saturday, with nine counties still under a state of emergency.”Nothing has been this bad that I’ve ever seen in this state,” Brown was quoted as saying by the Bee.”The devastation, the horror, the displacement, is truly something that none of us will ever forget.”Firefighters working 24 hours on, 24 hours off, have come in from around the western United States and even as far as the Carolinas to provide fresh legs for the battle. In Redwood Valley, a small town around 70 miles north of the Sonoma County fires that threatened world-renowned wineries, officials have been struggling with the gruesome task of naming victims. At least nine people were killed late Sunday by a wildfire that “swept through the area so fast it engulfed moving cars,” the Bee reported, but several remain unidentified. The settlement’s 2,300 residents have been begging for information about missing friends and relatives as rescuers scour the charred remains of dozens of homes.- ‘Hell on Earth’ -“This is hell on earth,” Sheriff Tom Allman told the newspaper as he confirmed the ninth death, an 86-year-old widow found in the ashes of her Redwood Valley house.”This is such an all encompassing tragedy — you lose a 14-year-old boy whose grandfather was a friend of mine, an elderly woman and her caretaker, a grandma and grandpa who died together.”The last week has been the deadliest for wildfires in California’s history, according to officials. The Griffith Park fire in Los Angeles County in 1933 killed at least 29 people, and 25 people died in the 1991 Oakland Hills fire.Sonoma County Sheriff Rob Giordano said Friday his department was continuing to track down people reported missing by family or friends. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department had received 1,308 missing persons reports so far and 1,052 people have been located, Giordano said.Evacuation orders were in place for several towns in Napa and Sonoma, where hundreds of people have already lost their homes to the fast-moving infernos. Many residents took to social media to berate President Donald Trump for his silence over the tragedy on his Twitter account.Trump’s tweets and retweets on Saturday were largely limited to observations on health care and his son Eric’s upcoming appearance on Fox News, with nothing about California.”Still no comments from Trump about devastating fires in California & the lives lost. Is it ’cause millions of CA voted for Hillary? How petty,” read one tweet, echoing much of the criticism.
Freddie Gray Jurors Deadlocked Judge Says Keep DeliberatingFreddie Gray Jurors Deadlocked Judge Says Keep Deliberating
The sun rises against Courthouse East, across the street from Baltimore City Hall, right, before a jury deliberates in the case of William Porter, one of six Baltimore city police officers charged in connection to the death of Freddie Gray, Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015, in Baltimore. (AP Photo/Patrick Semansky)BALTIMORE (AP) — Jurors in the manslaughter trial of a police officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray said Tuesday they were deadlocked, but the judge overseeing the case told them to keep deliberating. The jury sent a note to Baltimore Circuit Judge Barry Williams after about nine hours of discussions over two days. They are deliberating in the trial of Officer William Porter, the first of six officers to stand trial on charges stemming from Gray’s death in April. As the jury deliberated, armored vehicles and police were stationed around the city ahead of any verdict, and city and state officials promised they were prepared to prevent the unrest and rioting that saw parts of the city burned and looted last spring.FILE – In this April 28, 2015 file photo, police stand in formation as a curfew approache in Baltimore, a day after unrest that occurred following Freddie Gray’s funeral. On the campaign trail, among candidates of both parties, the idea of locking up drug criminals for life is a lot less popular than it was a generation ago. The 2016 presidential race has accelerated an evolution away from the traditional tough-on-crime candidate. A Republican Party thats long taken a law-and-order stance finds itself desperate to improve its standing among minority voters while Democratic candidates are also being drawn into national conversations on policing, drug crimes and prison costs. (AP Photo/Patrick Semansky, File)It was the fifth note the jury had sent the judge Tuesday. They had earlier requested highlighters, an easel and sticky notes, suggesting they were taking a businesslike approach to assessing Porter’s role in the arrest and death of Gray. The jury also received a set of external computer speakers to improve the sound quality of recordings in evidence, including Porter’s videotaped interview with Baltimore police detectives, police radio transmissions on the day Gray was arrested and cellphone videos made at two of the wagon’s six stops, starting with Gray’s arrest. The panel spent three hours deliberating Monday. Porter faces charges of manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct. If convicted of all charges, he could face 25 years in prison. The judge refused a jury request for the clerk’s list of trial exhibits, since the list isn’t evidence, and denied defense motions for a mistrial and change of trial location. The latter two requests were part of a motion seeking ask jurors if they’ve seen a letter the city schools chief sent home with children Monday, warning of consequences for violent responses to any verdict.Williams said it wouldn’t be appropriate to query the jury about the letterFILE – In this Dec. 3, 2015 photo, the Baltimore police van Freddie Gray was transported in the day of his arrest and injury is moved into a courthouse garage before being shown to jurors in the trial of officer William Porter in Baltimore. In Porters case, an officers negligence, rather than violent acts or excessive force, is on trial. He is also charged with assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office. If convicted, Porter faces up to 25 years in prison. Legal experts say when its inaction rather than action thats in question, it could be a hard case to prove. (Ian Duncan/The Baltimore Sun via AP, File) WASHINGTON EXAMINER OUT; MANDATORY CREDITIn closing arguments Monday, prosecutors said Porter could have save Gray’s life with two clicks: one to buckle him in with a seat belt and another to summon medical help with his police radio. Defense lawyers said Porter was not to blame for Gray’s death.Gray died April 19, a week after his neck was broken while he was in the back of the van with wrists and ankles shackled. The autopsy concluded that the injury probably came as Gray was slammed against a wall during cornering or braking.“Is two, three, four seconds worth a life?” prosecutor Janice Bledsoe asked the jury Monday.Jurors must determine whether they believe prosecutors, who say Porter’s indifference makes him criminally responsible for Gray’s injury, or the defense characterization of Porter as a conscientious officer who told supervisors to bring take Gray to the hospital.Porter took the stand in his own defense and testified that Gray showed no signs of pain or distress before he arrived at the police station critically injured.Prosecutors said this was a blatant lie.Freddie Gray funeral. (AP Photo)“Freddie Gray went into the van healthy and he came out of the van dead,” prosecutor Janice Bledsoe told jurors. The transport van “became his casket on wheels,” Bledsoe said.Gray was arrested while fleeing police in his neighborhood, just seven city blocks from the police station, yet police stopped the van repeatedly during a circuitous trip around West Baltimore that stretched on for 45 minutes.Bledsoe showed jurors the unfastened seat belt from the transport wagon. “It’s got Gray’s blood on it,” she said.“Don’t fall for that,” countered Porter’s attorney Joseph Murtha. He argued that expert witnesses disagreed on exactly when Gray’s neck was broken during his trip to the police station, and said this alone should give jurors reasonable doubt.Gray’s death was indeed a “horrific tragedy” but “there is literally no evidence” Porter is responsible, he said. “This case is based on rush to judgment and fear. What’s an acronym for fear? False evidence appears real.”

This marks the first time that Louisville has competed in this regatta, which takes place Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. “The team’s expectation is we can hold our own,” said Copeland. “We wanted a regatta in our time zone with extra water time to compete with teams similar to us.” Regatta Information Live results from the regatta will be available on Twitter at @FIRARowing. Last season, Louisville’s major road regatta was at the Pac-12 Challenge at Stanford, but this year, the Cards opted to remain closer to home. Smartphone addiction may create personal social problemsSmartphone addiction may create personal social problems
People who use smartphones in excess may experience personal, social and workplace problems warn new research. In the study, participants who identified themselves as “addicts” and “fanatics” exhibited signs that could indicate depression, social isolation, social anxiety, shyness, impulsivity and low self-esteem. “Our smartphones have turned into a tool that provides short, quick, immediate satisfaction, which is very triggering,” said Isaac Vaghefi, Assistant Professor at the Binghamton University-State University of New York. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”Our neurones get fired and dopamine is being released, and over time this makes us acquire a desire for quick feedback and immediate satisfaction. This process also has contributed to developing shorter attention spans and being more and more prone to boredom,” Vaghefi said. The umbrella term “technology addiction” refers to addictive behaviour related to social media, excessive texting, information overload, online shopping, gambling, video gaming, online pornography and overall smartphone usage. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveAccording to the study, seven per cent were identified as “addicts” and 12 per cent as “fanatics.” Both groups experience personal, social and workplace problems due to a compulsive need to be on their smartphones, according to the study published in the Information Systems Journal.Females were most likely to exhibit susceptibility to addiction.”While self-identified ‘addict’ users were in the minority, I predict technology addiction will increase as technology continues to advance and application, game and gadget developers find new ways to ensure users’ long-term engagement with technology,” Vaghefi said. The researchers said that if you constantly check your smartphone, even when it does not ring or vibrate, or you get paranoid when the smartphone is not with you, seeking professional help might be a good idea. Moreover, if you use technology as a way of escaping problems or relieving feelings of helplessness, guilt, anxiety or depression, or you ignore what is happening in real time in favour of what is happening virtually, you might then be a right candidate to seek professional help, the researchers said.
