(Image: 2Feet Music)Janine ErasmusHomegrown musical talent is once more in the international spotlight. South African singer/songwriter Baz Corden has been snapped up by major international mobile provider T-Mobile as the voice of their latest advertising campaign. The UK-based singer has contributed his latest single “There’s a Right Time for Everything”, to T-Mobile’s new television campaign, which is currently flighting in Europe.Corden released his solo album You Are Here, produced by David Birch (Stealing Love Jones, Parlotones and Perez), for 2Feet Music in 2008. The singer’s gentle, mainly acoustic style is described as a blend of jazz, folk, country and rock, sprinkled with whimsical, sometimes cryptic, lyrics.Mere weeks later, Corden was approached by the mobile provider and asked to provide music for its current European television campaign.T-Mobile is the world’s sixth largest mobile phone service provider according to number of subscribers. After UK-based Vodafone and Spain’s Telefónica, it is the third largest multi-national, with operations in the US, the UK, and 10 European countries. T-Mobile USA is the fourth largest wireless telecommunications network in America after AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint Nextel.T-Mobile asserts that it tries to use new tracks by up and coming artists in its adverts, adding that it would love to help take a musician’s career to the next level. This philosophy certainly seems to be working, as several songs from You Are Here have also been chosen for a National Geographic-sponsored documentary directed by Australian film maker Beau Miles.Home-grown talentBorn in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Barry “Baz” Corden was introduced to music when he was seven, after his parents gave him a guitar for Christmas – although he recalls that what he really wanted was a toy bakkie (pick-up truck).Later Corden formed his first punk band The Melted Crayons and took his first steps on the road to an exciting career. After stints in various other groups, he took a break from the band environment to work with popular South African solo musicians such as Nibs van der Spuy, Guy Buttery, Josie Field, Farryl Purkiss, and Luke Siedle. The guitarist also has previous international exposure, in the form of his former band Pistolfish, which was playlisted on college stations in the US. In addition, he has worked with producer Bjorn Thorsrud of Smashing Pumpkins fame.“I’m interested in, and fascinated by, the search for beautiful things in life,” said Corden. “Experiences, moments, things people might say or do.”With this noteworthy achievement Corden has taken one step closer to following in the footsteps of internationally famous South African artists such as Johnny Clegg, rock bands Seether and Tree63, and Afro-fusion group Freshlyground.Do you have queries or comments about this article? Many people underestimate the impact of sprains say foot scientists

first_img Source:https://www.salford.ac.uk/ Reviewed by Kate Anderton, B.Sc. (Editor)Nov 20 2018Thousands of people are increasing their risk of chronic ankle problems by underestimating the impact of sprains, according to foot scientists.Podiatrists at the University of Salford say sprains, picked up in sports like football, often need more attention than people think and if left uncorrected could predispose individuals to develop repeated ankle problems.Following a sprain, up to 70% of individuals develop lasting symptoms such as the ankle feeling unstable or starting to giving way and are vulnerable to recurrent sprains.Related StoriesAXT enhances cellular research product portfolio with solutions from StemBioSysResearch sheds light on sun-induced DNA damage and repairBridging the Gaps to Advance Research in the Cannabis IndustryThe research in the Journal of Ultrasound Medicine, using ultrasound scanning techniques, found differences in ligament size between those that have had ankle sprains and those who have not.People developing chronic instability generally had longer, thicker anterior talofibular ligaments than people with healthy ankles.Dr Chelsea Starbuck, who leads a series of ankle studies in the university’s School of Health & Society, said: “Once the pain of a sprain eases off people tend to treat their ankles as fully recuperated. However, sometimes there are underlying weaknesses or functional deficits which can augment with repeated twists.”It is still unclear why some individuals develop long term symptoms, yet others do not.”As part of that mission, the team is welcoming volunteers who have had an ankle sprain in the past two years. Volunteers will undergo an ultrasound scan and have their ability to perform functional tasks assessed with a 3D motion capture programme. The team says that improving understanding of the causes and characteristics of ankle instability will help in the development of remedies such as shoe design and orthotic supports to prevent sprains. One possible remedy for instability are supportive ankle-collars. Added Dr Starbuck: “We don’t know how these perform but have been commissioned to carrying out a project with New Balance to test a prototype shoe which features a flexible ankle-collar to support the ankle joint.”last_img read more

Scientists reveal new mechanism that could lead to specific treatment of strokes

first_img Source:https://www.cshl.edu/targeting-hidden-pocket-for-treatment-of-stroke-and-seizure/ Reviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)Jan 21 2019The ideal drug is one that only affects the exact cells and neurons it is designed to treat, without unwanted side effects. This concept is especially important when treating the delicate and complex human brain. Now, scientists at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory have revealed a mechanism that could lead to this kind of long-sought specificity for treatments of strokes and seizures.According to Professor Hiro Furukawa, the senior scientist who oversaw this work, “it really comes down to chemistry.”When the human brain is injured, such as during a stroke, parts of the brain begin to acidify. This acidification leads to the rampant release of glutamate.”We suddenly get more glutamate all over the place that hits the NMDA receptor and that causes the NMDA receptor to start firing quite a lot,” explains Furukawa.Related StoriesInvestment in stroke prevention interventions is good for the futureNew discovery may explain some forms of strokePeople who worked long hours have higher risk of stroke, shows studyIn a healthy brain, the NMDA (N-methyl, D-aspartate) receptor is responsible for controlling the flow of electrically charged atoms, or ions, in and out of a neuron. The “firing” of these signals is crucial for learning and memory formation. However, overactive neurons can lead to disastrous consequences. Abnormal NMDA receptor activities have been observed in various neurological diseases and disorders, such as stroke, seizure, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease, and in individuals born with genetic mutations.Furukawa’s team, in collaboration with scientists at Emory University, looked for a way to prevent over-firing NMDA receptors without affecting normal regions of the brain.Previous work had identified promising compounds, called the 93-series, suited to this purpose. Eager to join with the NMDA receptor in an acidic environment, these compounds downregulate the receptor activity, even in the presence of glutamate, thereby preventing excessive neuronal firing. However, the 93-series compounds sometimes cause the unwanted consequence of inhibiting the NMDA receptors in healthy parts of the brain. That’s why Furukawa and his colleagues set out to determine how they could improve upon the unique features of the 93-series.Their latest results are detailed in Nature Communications.Using a method known as X-ray crystallography, the researchers were able to see that a motif on the 93-series compound slots into a tiny, never-before-noticed pocket within the NMDA receptor. Experimentation showed that this pocket is particularly sensitive to the pH around it.”Now that we see the pH-sensitive pocket within NMDA receptors, we can suggest a different scaffold,” Furukawa explained. “We can redesign the 93-series chemical compound–let’s call it 94-series–in such a way that it can more effectively fit to that pocket and a higher pH sensitivity can be obtained. So, we’re basically just starting our effort to do that.”last_img read more

Physical activity may help fight depression in seniors

first_img Source:https://www.mcmaster.ca/ Reviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)Feb 8 2019The benefits of exercise are widely known but kinesiologists at McMaster University have for the first time found that physical activity may help fight depression in seniors by stimulating muscle-generated mood boosters. The findings, published in the American Journal of Physiology–Cell Physiology, reveal that the underlying mechanisms which make us feel good when we exercise persist into old age and highlight the importance of staying active.”A previous study demonstrated these mechanisms in healthy young adults, however, it was unknown whether the muscle deterioration which accompanies aging would preclude older adults from achieving similar exercise-induced benefits,” explains David Allison, lead author on the study and a postdoctoral fellow in McMaster’s Department of Kinesiology.Related StoriesNew structured approach to managing patients with depression in primary careCombining aerobic exercise and resistance training helps obese older adults preserve muscle massCaregiver depression linked to increased emergency department visits for patients with dementia”This could have important implications concerning the use of exercise as a treatment or a preventative strategy for depression in seniors,” he says.Little is known about the relationship between skeletal muscle and mental health, or how exercise impacts this relationship.Earlier research has shown that physical activity may help to ‘turn on’ genes within skeletal muscle which can then influence the key metabolic pathways that ultimately promote mood-enhancing chemicals, such as serotonin, within the brain.Muscle loss is a common problem in the elderly which may restrict that pathway and therefore increase the risk for depression, says Allison. For the study, a group of healthy men, aged 65 and over, followed a 12-week protocol of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on a stationary bike once a week combined with bi-weekly strength training sessions.Researchers analyzed blood samples and changes to muscle and determined that three months of exercise was enough to enhance gene expression within the skeletal muscle.”Even individuals who are already metabolically healthy–with good weight, good blood pressure and blood sugar levels–need to prioritize regular physical activity to maintain or improve upon their mental health,” says Allison. “We have shown such benefits are still achievable in old age and further emphasize the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle.”In the future, researchers hope to explore the relationship between mental health and exercise among the clinically depressed to see if similar biochemical changes can be achieved.last_img read more

Collagen powder found to be effective in wound closure

first_imgDuring normal wound healing, collagen acts as a scaffold for cellular entry and growth in the wound bed and encourages the deposition of new collagen. While collagen has been used as a wound healing adjuvant, a good comparison to the standard of wound care has been lacking.”Adam Friedman, MD, interim chair of the Department of Dermatology, GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, author on the study Reviewed by Kate Anderton, B.Sc. (Editor)Jul 8 2019Collagen powder is just as effective in managing skin biopsy wounds as primary closure with non-absorbable sutures, according to a first-of-its-kind study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology by a team of physician researchers at the George Washington University. The team investigated the efficacy of topical collagen powder compared to primary closure on the rate and quality of full-thickness wound healing through histopathological analysis of healing and comparison of symptoms and early cosmetic outcomes.Collagen is best known as an essential structural component of several organs, importantly the skin, but it also plays a pivotal role as a signaling molecule in the regulation of all phases of wound healing. Therefore, externally applied, collagen powder has significant potential for wound healing and care due to its ability to stop bleeding, to recruit immune and skin cells central to wound healing, as well as stimulate new blood vessel formation, and can be left in wounds without causing irritation or facilitating bacterial growth. Related StoriesArmy research may help improve cancer treatments and treat combat woundsFibrinogen a key player in health and disease, says new studyHow electrical stimulation promotes wound healingFriedman’s team administered two punch biopsies to eight volunteers and treated one wound with a daily topical collagen powder and the other with primary closure. Wounds were biopsied at four weeks for analysis and subjects were asked to rate the itch, pain, and treatment preferences throughout the process. The researchers found that six out of eight collagen-treated wounds were completely healed after four weeks after initial wounding and all wounds were completely healed eight weeks after the second biopsy. Patients reported similar pain and itch for both primary closure and collagen, with most attributing the itch to the adhesive dressings rather than the wound itself. The team concluded that based on these findings, wounds treated with collagen powder healed at least as well as those treated with primary closure and that the powder can be applied safely for at least four weeks.”Given the cost and time to place and remove sutures and the potential reimbursement for collagen, using topical collagen powder for punch biopsy wounds may be easier on the patient, not requiring an additional visit for suture removal and yielding an equivalent or possibly better wound healing outcome,” Friedman said. “Moving forward we need to further examine the parameters of collagen use on wounds, including duration of therapy and wound sizes.” Source:George Washington Universitylast_img read more

Who could join Apple in Wall Streets 1 trillion stock club

first_img Who’s next? That’s the “$1,000,000,000,000 Question” stock traders and 401(k) investors are pondering after the iPhone maker on Thursday became the first U.S. publicly traded stock to surpass a market value of $1 trillion.Finding companies with the clout, the sales, the killer product and the dominance to grow into a stock with a thirteen-digit market capitalization is all about focusing on the giants, the biggest companies that populate the large-company Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index.Gaining entrance to this club isn’t about who you know. It’s all about corporate wealth—or how much a company is worth measured in stock value. Here are three American-born tech giants that could soon be hanging out with Apple in $1 trillion stock club.Amazon (Market value: $889 billion; 12.5 percent shy of $1 trillion)The Jeff Bezos-led juggernaut is not only the king of the retail e-commerce space, with roughly 50% of the total market, according to eMarketer, it is also a lead player in the public cloud computing business via its Amazon Web Services unit. Additionally, Amazon makes lots of money—and is expected to keep growing earnings at a fast clip. In the quarter that ended in June, Amazon reported sales of $52.9 billion and a profit of $2.5 billion, the first time its quarterly net income has topped $2 billion. The company told Wall Street that it expects third-quarter net sales between $54.0 billion and $57.5 billion, which equates to year over year growth of 23 percent to 31 percent. After Amazon’s strong second-quarter results, Michael Graham, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity, raised his price target from $2,000 a share to $2,100. Achieving that would hurdle Amazon past the $1 trillion market value barrier. The bull case of Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak is $2,800, which would propel Amazon’s market capitalization to nearly $1.4 trillion. Amazon shares closed at $1,823.29 on Friday.Alphabet (Market value: $851 billion; 17.5 percent shy of $1 trillion)Google is the place many people go to conduct internet searches. The world’s leading search engine has leveraged that into a massive advertising business that helps Google parent Alphabet ring up huge profits. The company reported sales of $32.7 billion and a profit of $3.2 billion in this year’s second quarter, and that was after accounting for a $5.1 billion fine imposed by the European Commission. Alphabet is also sitting on lots of cash— $102.3 billion as of June 30. The money enables it to buy back its own shares, which makes the company’s earnings look even better, as well as invest in itself. The company spent $5.1 billion in research and development in the second quarter, money that’s being put to work in investments such as Waymo, its self-driving car project, artificial intelligence projects and its YouTube video streaming service. A 23 percent jump in revenue to $9.6 billion in the quarter ended in June helped drive a 17 percent overall increase in sales to $30.1 billion. “Our early investments in the intelligent cloud … are paying off,” Nadella said in the company’s most recent earnings report. Wall Street analysts remain bullish on the stock, with Oppenheimer’s Timothy Horan recently upping his price target to $120. That would put the shares within striking distance of a $1 trillion market cap. “We expect a very strong next few quarters,” Horan told clients in a research note. (2019, July 11) retrieved 17 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2019-07-moon.html With NASA planning to revisit the lunar surface by 2024 and send multiple expeditions by 2028, Rutgers University’s Haym Benaroya is optimistic that people will someday live on the moon. Benaroya, a distinguished professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, has spent most of his career focusing on lunar settlement and space exploration issues.Benaroya, who works in the School of Engineering and wrote “Turning Dust to Gold: Building a Future on the Moon and Mars” and “Building Habitats on the Moon,” and specializes in designing structures for extreme environments, discussed the challenges of living on the moon. What do you study? How to design structures for extreme environments like the moon, Gulf of Mexico and North Sea that are very challenging and potentially dangerous. The main challenge is to determine the forces these structures will face so we can design ones that will survive. How would you describe the forces and environment on the moon? It’s a low-gravity environment in a vacuum, with very high to very low temperatures and intense radiation from the sun. Micrometeorites the size of sand grains travel around 10 miles a second, so shielding is needed to keep them from going through you. What would the first structures on the moon be like?Initially, very small. A lunar base may have two or three rooms the size of a typical office. We will bring structures—basically prefabbed cylinders like the ones on the International Space Station—from Earth. One concept is to cover them with about 10 feet of regolith—the small rocks covering the moon’s surface—because that would shield the interior from micrometeorites, extreme temperatures and radiation. What physiological and psychological challenges are there in living on the moon?It is a psychological challenge for most humans to live in small spaces. The low-gravity environment changes blood flow and affects the eyes, bones and muscles. Some regolith particles are tiny and jagged, and they get into astronaut suits and machines. One issue is how to filter them from space suits, prevent astronauts from dragging them into structures, and safeguard rovers and other equipment outside. How many years would it take to establish a year-round station or colony on the moon?Ten to 15 years if we’re really serious about it. We have much of the technology. The biggest challenge is ensuring that people survive on the moon. Initially, astronauts will live there for six- to 12-month stints like they do on the space station. How important is a mission to the moon overall? It’s a very positive mission that focuses on the future. If we say we’re going to go to the moon and Mars and we’re exploring the solar system, we’re doing it to enhance humanity and we will learn lots of things that will help people on Earth. We could create a whole new civilization and economy. It can take humanity to the next level, with huge leaps in capabilities and options for many people. Madden 20 ratings Which NFL teams have the best offenses to use

first_imgBills71 Eagles87 What is the best offense to use in Madden 20?SaintsThe Saints are absolutely loaded on offense and deserve the top ranking. Four of their top five overall players are on offense, with three of them being key playmakers (WR Michael Thomas, QB Drew Brees, RB Alvin Kamara). Plus with additional weapons like TE Jared Cook (87) and WR Tedd Ginn (92 speed), there’s really a little bit of everything you need on this team.PatriotsThe Patriots are top-heavy with QB Tom Brady (96), and after him there are no other 90+ overall players on offense. The other top skill position players include WR Julian Edelman (89), HB James White (86), HB Sony Michel (84) and WR Josh Gordon (83). This offense has a solid overall rating, but depending on your playing style it may not be the right for you.ColtsIndianapolis being No. 3 overall is a bit of a surprise, but their unique offense is what puts them here. Seven of their top 10 overall players are on offense, with QB Andrew Luck (92) and WR T.Y. Hilton (91) leading the way. Dual tight ends Eric Ebron (86) and Jack Doyle (85) are also included in that, with the others being offensive linemen. What is the worst offense to use in Madden 20?DolphinsThe Dolphins are the only team in Madden with a major category rated below 70. A big reason why is the lack of a true starting quarterback with veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick at 75 overall and newcomer Josh Rosen is 70 overall. Only two players on offense are rated 80+ (WR Kenny Stills and LT Laremy Tunsil, both 84). There’s a reason this team is rated last, and it’s because there’s not a lot of fun you can have playing with this offense. Patriots91 Cowboys86 Giants75 Rams83 Colts91 Seahawks80 Broncos75 Bengals78 Raiders82 BillsBuffalo may have the second-worst overall offensive rating in Madden 20, but there’s still some fun you can have with this team. QB Josh Allen has the best throw power in the game (99), which he can use to launch the ball to WR John Brown, who has 94 speed. Buffalo has decent playmakers to get the ball to, but the poor offensive line may make it difficult to get much accomplished.JaguarsUnlike the Bills, there isn’t much to like here with the Jaguars. HB Leonard Fournette is the most intriguing playmaker, but his 81 overall rating doesn’t make him a must-play option. Wideouts Marqise Lee, Dede Westbrook and Keelan Cole are all similar in ratings which makes none of them really stand out. Honorable Mention: CardinalsThe Cardinals are listed as the fourth-worst offense in Madden 20, but I imagine people will end up playing with them anyway. Rookie QB Kyler Murray is only 73 overall, but his 91 speed will make him a fun player to use in games. Plus with players like HB David Johnson, WR Larry Fitzgerald and WR Christian Kirk, there are plenty of playmakers surrounding Murray to make this fun. Also, hidden on the depth chart is WR Andy Isabella with 95 speed. AmInvest Research retains Neutral on EMS players for H2

first_img {{category}} {{time}} {{title}} ATA’s group chairman Datuk Seri Foo Chee Juan said the company has eight surface-mount technology (SMT) lines on the private side and plans to increase this to 18 lines by 2HCY19, with plans to inject the PCBA and battery pack capabilities into ATA by mid-2021. Wire harness production will commence in August 2019 while brush bar assembly will start production at end-CY2019, with contributions expected in 2HFY20 and 4QFY20 respectively.Following the US-China trade war, VSI has received enquiries from MNCs looking to shift or diversify their manufacturing bases from China to Southeast Asia. The group is in the midst of discussion with various prospects and is positive on its potential to  secure new orders and/or customers as it has a 180K sqft factory which will be ready by end-CY2019 to accommodate new prospects.AmInvest Research said it may upgrade the sector to Overweight (i) the companies secure major orders and/or key customers which boosts box-build orders; and (ii) performance of overseas operations (such as VSI’s) improves due to better cost-saving initiatives and comeback in sales orders. KUALA LUMPUR: AmInvestment Research is retaining its Neutral stance on Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) players for 2H19.It said on Friday the manufacturers’ positive prospects tied to the production of household general products such as V.S. Industry (VSI) and ATA IMS (ATA) have been fairly factored in.The research house said ATA’s 4QFY19 results were below expectations at RM21mil due to lower box-build orders as there were less working days attributed to festive seasons, and higher taxation seen for the quarter as some expenses were being disallowed for tax purposes. “ATA’s FY20 earnings are expected to be boosted by higher sales orders from its key customer following the addition of two assembly lines,” it said. VSI’s 3QFY19 results were slightly above expectations at RM22mil, despite a 22% decline in core profit and 10% fall in revenue due to slowdown in orders for its key customer in its Malaysian segment. The decline in box build orders for its key customer’s floorcare products was not as severe as initially anticipated while the customer’s beauty product sales boosted orders. “VSI’s 4Q is anticipated to register similar profits based on its current order visibility, also owing to the 4Q being a seasonally stronger quarter for one of its key Malaysian operations customer, Keurig.“VSI currently has 3.5 lines running for the key customer, producing a mixture of a personal care product and floorcare products while ATA has 14 lines for its key customer with a broad product range of floorcare products and healthy lifestyle products, after adding two assembly lines for FY20F on the back of growing orders,” it said.To recap, AmInvest Research said VSI and ATA are diversifying their customer base through securing new customers. In March 2019, VSI entered into a master supply agreement with Bissell in March 2019, where the group has dedicated a 160,000 sqft plant to the customer that is equipped with injection moulding facilities, assembly lines, a warehouse and test lab. Bissell’s earnings contribution kicks in from FY20F onwards with sales anticipated to reach RM1.2bil by CY2022. VSI is expected to mass produce one model of its carpet cleaner in August 2019. Higher margins are expected for Bissell relative to VSI’s other customers due to the ability to choose and negotiate its own suppliers which could potentially lead to margin savings. As for ATA secured a contract to manufacture a household appliance equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities. The group has allocated 1 line for the customer but the contribution is expected to be negligible at 1–2% of total revenue. Although production volume is low, ATA is keen to explore the potential of IoT capabilities.AmInvest Research said vertical integration positioning translates to more job wins.It pointed out VSI is a known vertically-integrated player with tooling, plastic injection, PCBA and assembling capabilities, which give it an edge compared with peers who lack PCBA or tooling capabilities. However, local peer SKP Resources (SKP) has recently added PCBA capabilities, commencing in 1H19.Meanwhile, ATA has also bumped up its efforts to be vertically-integrated by adding 4 capabilities i.e. PCBA, battery pack, wire harness and brush bar assembly in order to be self-sufficient and reduce reliance on external suppliers.  Business News 05 Jul 2019 AmInvest Research neutral on O&G, top picks Serba Dinamik, Dialog Analyst Reports Related News “VSI’s 4Q is anticipated to register similar profits based on its current order visibility, also owing to the 4Q being a seasonally stronger quarter for one of its key Malaysian operations customer, Keurig,” AmInvest Research says.
