Whittier uses its head to beat Cal

first_imgWHITTIER – Whittier High School probably won’t be playing in next week’s CIF-Southern Section boys soccer playoffs. But the Cardinals weren’t exactly complaining Wednesday afternoon. Whittier, using a commitment to defense, instead was all smiles after scoring a 1-0 victory over host California in a Del Rio League game. The Cardinals, who scored the only goal on a header by Pablo Duarte, finished 7-8-2 overall and tied La Serna for fourth place, both with 4-4-2 league marks. California (11-8-1, 5-5), despite the loss, is the league’s No. 3 playoff representative by virtue of its five league wins. Whittier and La Serna, which tied Santa Fe on Wednesday, can receive at-large bids. “I’m very proud of my kids. They are very happy to beat Cal High,” said Whittier co-head coach Sal Mendoza, whose team swept the Condors in the season series. “This game was not big just because we had a shot at CIF, but we wanted to end the season with a win and beat a team like Cal High.” The Cardinals did it with defense. They held California to eight shots and constantly frustrated the Condors by controlling the middle of the field. “It was a hard day,” California coach Dave Rolfe said. “They shut the door on us. Once they got that goal (in the second half), they just packed it in.” The score in question came early in the second half. Mario Equer started the run by sending in a deep pass down the right sideline to Heder Guillen. center_img The senior forward then dribbled in before launching a crossing pass to Duarte, who was in perfect position to head the ball to the left of goalie Johann Harich in the 42nd minute. Cal’s best chance came in the 66th minute on a throw-in by Michael Paz. The ball first bounced off goalie Gustavo Anaya, but Freddy Limon’s rebound shot was wide. “I did drop everybody back,” Mendoza said. “But I shifted over to Paz because I knew he could decide the game.” steve.ramirez@sgvn.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3061 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Twitter Upgrades Android App – Users Still Denied Official Push Notifications

first_imgWhat it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement Last September we interviewed a number of User Experience experts from throughout the tech industry about what push notifications would mean for the iPhone. I think the most important response came from Aviel Ginzburg, UX guy at Seattle-based Untitled Startup, makers of Twitter bulk-conversation analysis tool RowFeeder. I think Ginzburg’s predictions for what iPhone push would mean to Twitter users have proven correct. Check them out and ask yourself, “ought not Android users be offered this as well?”“Those of us who have been using Twitter since the days that it was largely (entirely) text messaging driven perceive Twitter much differently than mainstream users.“Two days ago I was having coffee with a friend of mine, who has been on Twitter for a little over a year (tweets everyday, DMs, @replies people, and even owns an iphone w/Twitter for iPhone) and as my phone beeped over and over again, she asked me if something was wrong. I said no, I just get my DMs text messaged to my phone. Her response was, ‘you can do that?!’“She has been using Twitter like people use Facebook, as a way to consume (mainly) and share content in a ‘on your own time’ fashion. When she uses Twitter, she really uses it, but in controlled bursts when she is physically engaging.“The way that the site has been restructured in the past several months including the new search, celebrity, and brand focus, categories, featured tweets, promotions, etc have drawn in the mainstream in such a way that they aren’t perceiving Twitter in the way that the early adopters do – as a real-time communication platform that will one day replace text messaging, email, and even phone calls. Just look at the Twitter homepage… it’s a text media consumption site.“With the announcement of push notifications, they’re bringing the messaging platform core value proposition back to the forefront, and pushing the mainstream, who joined Twitter for entirely different reasons, to experience Twitter in the same way us early adopters do — as a real-time communication channel that you never disconnect from. The concern of course is: have these users really signed-up for entering a service where the are expected to be available and engaged at all times?“It may seem like a small and logical update (cut out the text messaging middle-man), but really, Twitter is going to be dramatically changing the way its mainstreams users experience and use Twitter.”We asked Twitter for any details about push on Android. Their response, “nothing to share right now.” Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology marshall kirkpatrick Twitter announced a new version of its app for Android today, which it says is now one of the top 5 most popular ways to access Twitter. The new version is easier to read updates on without having an account, has more granular search options and interface more like the one iPhone owners see. What may be most notable though is the abscence of new features. Twitter for iPhone got push notifications for @ mentions and direct messages a whole three months ago. Twitter said at the time that it hoped to add push to Android soon, but it’s not in this new version. Also missing: any ability to log in to multiple accounts. Other power-user features may or may not come to Twitter’s official app someday, but the abscence of official push notifications is a real loss.Twitter on Android does perform periodic polling for replies, but it’s not in real time like real push notifications and users complain about the cost to battery life.Perhaps Twitter aims its own app at the most mainstream of users, the people it imagines mostly reading Tweets from famous people and a few friends or family, and assumes the rest of us feature-hungry types will get our fix from 3rd party apps. That could be a good strategy. Tags:#mobile#web Related Posts last_img read more

Three bungalows and a Chief Minister

first_imgThe Rashtriya Janata Dal has taken a dig at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for having three sprawling official bungalows — two in Patna and one in Delhi — wondering “when will vikas (development) come out of Mr. Kumar’s bungalow”. Over 150 legislators in the State do not have official houses as construction work on MLA flats has been on for years. Mr. Kumar’s official address in Patna is 1, Anne Marg. Across the road is another house on 7, Circular Road which was allotted to him as former Chief Minister. Recently, he was allotted a top-bracket bungalow at 6, K Kamraj Lane in Lutyen’s Delhi. JD(U) leaders said he was allotted the bungalow as Chief Ministers of other States also have been allotted houses in Delhi. The RJD leaders wonder “hasn’t Mr. Kumar been CM for over 12 years? … why does he need the bungalow now?” Opposition leader Tejaswi Yadav said: “Nitish Kumar spends most of his time in Delhi and is not interested in development work in Bihar.”In May 2014, Nitish Kumar, owning moral responsibility for the party’s poor performance in the parliamentary election, handed over power to Jitan Ram Manjhi and moved to the 7, Circular Road bungalow. On June 3, the Manjhi Cabinet approved a proposal of the Cabinet secretariat to provide two personal secretaries, two lower division clerks and four peons as Mr. Kumar’s personal staff for the next five years. Mr. Kumar was also provided a bulletproof car, armed escort and pilot vehicles. In February 2015, Mr. Kumar became the Chief Minister again. He moved to the designated CM’s bungalow at Anne Marg. But he did not vacate the Circular Road bungalow. In June 2016, Sushil Kumar Modi, who was in the Opposition then, accused Mr. Kumar of “misusing” over ` ₹5.02 crore on the maintenance of his bungalow at Circular Road. In a letter to Mr. Kumar, Mr. Modi asked why and how the Chief Minister could be allotted two bungalows. “When former CMs Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi can live in one bungalow with their two Minister sons, why do you need two houses? …you’ve have been chosen CM for five years and it would be the duty of the next government to allot a house to a former CM. Allotting yourself two houses during your tenure as CM shows you are short on confidence about getting a bungalow of your choice once you demit office”, Mr. Modi said in the letter. However, in July 2016, Mr. Kumar dumped the RJD to join hands with the BJP and formed the NDA government in Bihar once again. The State BJP leaders kept mum on the issue. “I don’t have anything to comment. I’m not even aware whether he has been allotted a bungalow in Delhi”, said a senior BJP leader. An MLA who is living in a rented house — the State government provides ₹28,000 a month to a legislator living on rent — pointed out: “The Supreme Court passed an order on August 1, 2016 banning the allotment of official bungalows to former Chief Ministers for life”.last_img
