Bolt pulls out of Zurich meet

first_imgAfter his 9.98 100m performance in Warsaw on Saturday night, Usain Bolt has decided to end his 2014 season and will not compete in the 100m in the IAAF Diamond League final in Zurich this coming Thursday, organisers for the Swiss meeting announced on Sunday (24).Usain Bolt’s background training this year was disrupted by injury and while his coach Glen Mills is satisfied with his performances in the three competitions he took part in, he feels it is now time to bring an end to the season while the sprinter is healthy and injury free, with a view to his preparations for the 2015 season.Bolt will now take a period of rest, do some sponsor activities, and then resume training in October.Patrick Magyar, Meeting Director of Weltklasse Zurich, regrets but understands Bolt and his coach’s decision: “Usain’s body has delivered tremendous performances over the last years but it is a body and not a machine. If an athlete of that level and his coach feel more rest is needed, we are certainly not going to question this and fully support this decision.”last_img read more

Man Utd stun Chelsea to close gap on top four

first_imgCaptain Maguire heads home to give Man Utd a 2 goal advantage.London, United Kingdom | AFP | Manchester United moved to within three points of fourth-placed Chelsea with a smash and grab 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire on Monday.Chelsea had two goals disallowed by VAR reviews and were furious Maguire was not sent-off early on for an off-the-ball kick out at Michy Batshuayi. However, Blues boss Frank Lampard cut a frustrated figure as the flaws in both boxes which have seen his side win just four of their last 14 league games were exposed once more against ordinary opposition.Victory lifts United up to seventh and within two points of Tottenham in fifth, which could be good enough to qualify for the Champions League next season pending Manchester City’s appeal again a two-season ban from European competition.Lampard made a bold call before kick-off by again dropping the most expensive goalkeeper in football history, Kepa Arrizabalaga, to the bench in favour of the 38-year-old Willy Caballero.Batshuayi also started with Tammy Abraham ruled out by injury and Lampard’s anger at missing out on a striker in the January window was borne out by a poor night for the misfiring Belgium forward.Chelsea suffered another injury blow early on when N’Golo Kante hobbled off and the France World Cup winner is now a doubt to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League next week. The loss of Kante did not disrupt the home side’s early rhythm as Reece James and Willian fired just wide.Chelsea were then furious Maguire somehow escaped without being sent-off for kicking Batshuayi after the two collided in front of the dugouts. The former Marseille attacker then squandered the first of a host of chances by firing wide from Mason Mount’s cut-back.– One-way traffic – Chelsea’s sense of injustice increased when Willian was harshly booked for diving as he went down under a challenge from Bruno Fernandes looking for a penalty.United had not made Caballero make a single save before going in front a minute before the break when Martial planted a brilliant header into the far corner from Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross. There was still time for Batshuayi to miss another chance before half-time when he skewed wide from a narrow angle. The one-way traffic continued at the start of the second period as Mount hit the post and a brave block from Wan-Bissaka deflected Pedro’s goal-bound effort behind. But even when Chelsea did get the ball in the net through substitute Kurt Zouma, the goal was ruled out by VAR for a push on Brandon Williams by Cesar Azpilicueta.Fernandes was unable to make much of an impact from open play in his second United appearance since a £47 million ($62 million) move from Sporting Lisbon. However, the Portuguese international is a huge threat from set-pieces and nearly caught Caballero out with a free-kick that crashed back off the post.Moments later, Fernandes provided his first assist for the Red Devils with a corner which Maguire powered home.Lampard had seen enough from Batshuayi and handed Olivier Giroud a rare appearance off the bench for the final quarter. The French striker thought he had given Chelsea a lifeline with a near post header, but was ruled offside after a VAR review.Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

Anthony Wayne members tour Sunshine facilities

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest On September 20th, several Anthony Wayne FFA members took a field trip to the Sunshine facilities in Maumee. To begin the field trip, the classes toured Sunshine’s barn and greenhouse, while learning about volunteer opportunities. After the tour, the classes split up and began different activities. The Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources II and Genetics classes worked with the residents of Sunshine to build their own hydroponics systems out of gallon jugs. They will be growing basil and lettuce in these systems. Madelynn Mangold said “My favorite part was helping the residents and seeing the smiles on their faces when they knew that they were going to be able to grow their own food by hydroponics”.  The Equine & Vet Science and Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources II students cleaned horse stalls in the barn. They also painted and washed ponies to help desensitize the animals so that they are safe for the Sunshine residents. After returning to Anthony Wayne, several students worked to take apart old pallets and cut wood for Sunshine residents to use to create pallet yard art. This new collaboration has been a great opportunity for FFA members to be involved in their community while learning more about Sunshine. Kayleigh Roberts disassembled pallets for Sunshine residents to create scarecrows and snowmen pallet art. Anthony Wayne FFA members (Left to right: Madelynn Mangold, Ava Siwa, Jensen Sharp, Carley Winslow, Luke Gunn, Aubrey Armstrong) along with two Sunshine residents built hydroponic systems together. Maggie Burkett, Miranda King, Megan Eisinger and Autumn Atamanick painted a pony to help remove the sunset for Sunshine residents. FFA members took a tour of the greenhouses and raised gardens at Sunshine.last_img read more

SharePrint Related Share with your Friends:Morelast_img read more

Newspaper Wants Readers to Pay to Comment

first_imgTags:#news#web Earlier this year, the Sun Chronicle, a small Massachusetts-based newspaper, closed down comments on its website after discussions in the paper’s comment section got out of hand. Now, in order to “encourage intelligent and meaningful conversation,” all posters on the site will have to register with their full name, address, phone number, email and credit card number. Users will have to verify their identity by using their credit card to pay a one-time fee of $0.99 to activate their accounts. All comments will now include the full name and hometown of the commenter. For those of us who regularly frequent the comment sections of blogs and news sites, the revelation that anonymous comments don’t always lead to “intelligent and meaningful conversations” doesn’t come as a surprise. Some sites, including MetaFilter, already charge users a small fee to activate their accounts in order to ensure that commenters are committed to providing quality content (and to keep spammers away). MetaFilter, however, still allows users to remain anonymous.Earlier this week, Blizzard – the company behind the immensely popular World of Warcraft and Starcraft games – announced that it would require users of its forums to use their real names when posting to the company’s forums. This, according to Blizzard, will reduce “flame wars, trolling and other unpleasantness” on the forums. Does Anonymity Only Encourage “Ugly Speech?According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Eva Galperin, however, it’s wrong to assume that online anonymity only enables “ugly speech.” Instead, she argues, that “behind the veil of anonymity, individuals are more free to surface honest observations, unheard complaints, unpopular opinions.”What Do You Think? What do you think? Does the use of real names encourage better online discussions or does it keep users from really expressing their honest opinions? Let us know in the comments (where you can remain fully anonymous). Why RIM Absolutely Must Seed BlackBerry 10 To The Federal Government

first_imgWhy IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces During the decline of Research In Motions base of loyal followers, the BlackBerry maker could always count on one bastion of users that would never surrender to the iPhone/Android duopoly: the United States government. Ever an organization of extremely security conscious agencies, the U.S. federal government has long preferred BlackBerries over any other choice. The combination of security and communications in conjunction with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server gave RIM unique capabilities to serve the federal government in a way that no other mobile device maker could.  That base of support for BlackBerry in government finally started to erode in the past several years as RIM was unable to keep up with the quick iteration of new devices and touchscreen capabilities coming from Apple and Android. While many government agencies still mandated BlackBerries for their employees, more and more agencies have started to give their employees a choice, most often the iPhone. Progressive agencies like NASA moved towards both the iPhone and Android – and there have been overtures from the Department of Defense (by far the largest federal agency) and prominent contractors like Booz Allen Hamilton. In short, BlackBerry use among federal agencies has been declining for much the same reasons that it has among top enterprises and the consumer sector: newer, better options along with increased security and mobile management options for non-BlackBerry platforms. BlackBerry 10 On ICEOn Thursday, however, RIM may have notched a small victory in its quest to keep BlackBerries as the preferred smartphone of federal agencies. The Immigrations and Custom Enforcement agency (ICE) has announced that it will begin a pilot program to test RIM’s new BlackBerry 10 (BB 10) mobile operating system along with the BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 (BES 10) starting in January 2013. ICE will be among the first government agencies to test BlackBerry 10, but the timing of the announcement is a little odd. Just two months ago ICE announced that it would let its employees use iPhones instead of BlackBerries. In all, about 17,000 ICE employees were being switched away from aging BlackBerries to Apple devices. “Our priority is to ensure that ICE and all government agencies understand the full capabilities of the new BlackBerry 10 platform and how it can help them meet their mobility needs today and in the future. We are confident that they will be impressed by what they see and how BlackBerry 10 can help them develop new opportunities, improve service delivery and fully leverage the potential of mobile communications. We look forward to continuing our long-standing relationship with ICE and other global government organizations,” said Scott Totzke, senior vice president, BlackBerry Security, at RIM in an emailed statement to ReadWrite.BB 10 I FIPS CertifiedOne big chip that RIM has in its pocket for BB 10 is that the operating system already has FIPS 140-2 (Federal Information Processing Standards) certification well ahead of its January 30th launch. RIM announced the FIPS certification in a surprise announcement in November. Normally, FIPS certification comes for an operating system or a device four to six months after the device is released as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) takes time to work through its queue of devices seeking approval to be used in the federal government. The fact that RIM already has FIPS 140-2 certification suggests that the company has had a close-to-consumer ready version of BlackBerry 10 working since at least the middle of 2012. The pilot program by ICE and other government agencies could well end up being very important for the future of RIM and the success of BlackBerry 10. Many large enterprises and top government contractors look towards what the federal government is doing to secure its mobile devices when making decisions on what devices they will roll out to their employees. While there are several enterprise-grade security certifications, FIPS is seen as a standard-bearer in mobile security.RIM fully understands that it needs to take a proactive attitute to maintain its leadership position in placing BlackBerries in government employees’ hands  – if only for the potential trickle-down effect from governement agency to contractor to enterprise to consumer. The ICE pilot program is a good start. Top photo courtesy Shutterstock. Building a Predictive Analytics Model From Scratch

first_imgThere’s a lot of talk right now about the potential value AI can bring to businesses, and the logistics business – because of its complexity and how much e-commerce depends on it – is no exception.Imagine your e-commerce business needs to ship an order from San Francisco to Seattle and you’ve promised 2-day delivery. It’s 3:34pm and USPS, UPS, FedEx, and Ontrac all have different cutoff times at their sortation facilities. It’s going to take your warehouse between 15 and 45 minutes to pick and pack the order, and there’s a 62% chance of a thunderstorm over San Francisco tonight. Do you ship it by air (express) or by ground? If you choose to ship it by air you lose all of your profit margin. If you choose ground your margin is great, but it may be late and you risk losing the customer. The only way to make this decision in real-time, thousands of times per day for your growing business is to predict the future. There’s far too many variables and factors for a human to take into account – you need AI. You need a predictive model. And if you don’t have one and your competitors do you will cede ground to them and lose the competitive advantage.Start With the DataThis is the promise of AI and Machine Learning (ML) – collect a mountain of data, feed it into a predictive model, and profit! Unfortunately, it’s not quite that simple. Even the best neural networks have difficulty extracting accurate predictions for very complex real-world questions. In 2016 DeepMind used a self-taught neural network to beat the 18-time world champion Go player – a game arguably more complex than chess. Training a neural network to play games (e.g. Chess or Go) isn’t easy, however it is different from the real-world in that you have perfect, accurate data at all times. You know the positions and possibilities for every piece on the board, and you know instantly when they change. This is rarely the case for difficult business questions that you want answered in order to gain a competitive advantage or reduce costs.Your data is likely coming from multiple sources of varying quality, it’s not guaranteed to be delivered to you in real-time, and there’s far too much of it – more noise than signal. Before you start dumping all of your data into Tensorflow or Google Cloud AutoML Table you need to deeply understand your domain, and hire a data scientist.Statistical processing has been around for decades, and only a trained data scientist is going to be able to work through the petabytes of data you’ve collected and clean it up so that your predictions will be accurate. A lot of the excitement around AI and ML is that we’ll get better models with much less work – no more tedious feature extraction or selecting variables! But that’s just not the case… yet. Almost none of your raw data is going to be optimally suited for a predictive model – it will all need to be massaged into multiple formats for each specific application. It’s common for people new to the field to get excited by how easy modern AI and ML tools are to use, however the devil is in the details. Even the simplest models will give you a prediction, but the accuracy of those predictions will be so bad that you won’t be able to extract business value from them. Unfortunately the difference between a naive model and a sophisticated one developed by a data scientist will be borne out in the accuracy and confidence you have in its predictions. Our ExperienceAt EasyPost we try to predict when shipments will arrive at their destinations, however even with tens of billions of data points about past shipments this is extremely difficult to do. When we began trying to make these predictions with our tracking data alone the results were abysmal. However, when we began pairing data scientists with shipping experts we were able to make huge strides in speed and accuracy. An example of where human intelligence can assist the AI is that our human experts understand the importance of cutoff times at sortation facilities in the logistics industry. By adding data from domain experts – in this case the cutoff times at each facility type in the carrier networks – we were able to vastly improve our results. By adding domain specific, relevant data to our scientists’ toolkit we are able to create a more intelligent model than with AI alone.ConclusionIn our experience a complicated question like the one posed earlier about shipping times contains too many variables for today’s best neural networks to learn and solve on their own. Luckily, they don’t have to, but you’ll need data scientists to work with domain experts in order to properly weight the significance of air humidity levels over the Bay Area! The future for predictive models is bright, however don’t ignore the past! Statistical processing and data science are the key to framing and simplifying complex business questions so that state of the art AI and ML can grapple with them.
